In many ways Berta can be seen as the lovechild of two great Surry Hills restaurants: Vini and Billy Kwong. A collaboration between Vini owner Andrew Cibej and Head chef O Tama Carey, fresh from a stint at Kylie Kwong's famous Crown Street eating house, Berta is almost guaranteed to be a resounding success.
Down one of the city's many backstreets and behind an unassuming door, this industrial-chic small bar has just the right balance of minimalist decor and intimate lighting to create the desired effect. The whole space is saved from being sterile by carefully placed chalkboards showing the food menu and extensive wine list - both of which are Italian, but not as you know it.
The food on offer is as far removed from pasta with red sauce and cheesy lasagne as Italian food can get. Instead there is a sophisticated list of modestly-priced dishes designed for sharing (think dishes like prawns capers chilli or cauliflower chickpeas and caraway). The wine list is evidently a work of passion for Italian wines and well-worth exploring in-depth.
