Following the successful bookshop/cafe formula of its various Berkelouw counterparts in Paddington, Leichhardt, Berrima and other locales, this charming concept has finally reached Newtown folk. Set in an old, renovated warehouse building, the cafe sits on the second floor amid an enormous collection of more than 50,000 new, used and rare books. Serving fair trade coffee and baked goods that are freshly made on-site, Berkelouw Books Cafe has the makings of a popular hangout for the local crowd.

a beautiful place to think
Berkelouw has won my heart for its aesthetic, large leather sofas and second hand books. It is the abode for the wind-down times. One is welcome to sit and sip comfortably. It wins points for atmosphere and is probably a frontrunner in the line up of stunning cafes. Unfortunately the service is quite average, if not below. The manager seems to have left his people skills at home. Some of the staff are really lovely and helpful. Watch out for TLC tea - it has garlic in it, as well as lemon and ginger. The coffee is above standard as the food is. I would choose Berkelouw for a catch up over coffee and deep-and-meaningful.
