Bergerac

With a name like Bergerac and a picture of the long-nosed lover on one wall, the Gallic focus of this restaurant is immediately obvious. The addition of long leather banquettes, linen-topped tables and sweeping drapes only contributes further to the romantic French theme. Before the menu arrives, the expectation is for traditional French cuisine, and diners are not disappointed. Entrees cover the compulsory classics, from French onion soup with cheese croutons to foie gras and escargots. Mains similarly satisfy, ranging from a hearty bouillabaisse to canard a l'orange. If you have room, the fondant au chocolat beckons from the dessert menu - a suitably decadent end to an indulgent French feast.

Ooh la la - c'est fantastique!
Sorry....my recent dining experience here had me attempting some high school French.

My daughter and I had dinner here earlier this week and it was a wonderful all round experience. We started with some sensational (and quite reasonably priced) French champagne. Continued with an exquisite NZ sauv blanc and some truly awesome food. Our waiter was wonderful and attentive and we cannot wait to return!

Very Enjoyable
Despite only living a few blocks away, I had my first visit to Bergerac last night with my wife and a mate.

As others have noted it has a lovely french feel about it and the menu focuses on traditional french favourites. We enjoyed a rabbit and pistachio terrine and a lovely chicken liver pate' to start - both very nice but a little more toasted baguette would have been useful.

For mains my wife had veal and my mate and I Duck confit, for $28 each they were very well priced. All were generous serves and very tasty. Wine list was sound and well priced.

Service was very attentive without being obtrusive.

Overall a very good experience. I'll be back for sure.

A fine dining experience
This is one classy restaurant doing classic French cuisine, none of the mod-oz or molecular reduction that passes for too much fine dining these days.

Bergerac has it all - well spaced tables so you can hear each other, good service, an excellent food menu, and an extensive and good value wine list.

I enjoyed the steak aux deux poivres, which was cooked to perfection, whilst my better half enjoyed a salmon dish. We shared a dessert from the blackboard specials, a lemon pudding, which was magnificent, a sweet sauce mixed with the crunch of cake. We will be back on our next Melbourne trip.

Definately a must visit
The food was done to perfection and just the right amount. The atmosphere was decidedly french with music playing in the background that was at a level where you could hold a conversation without shouting. The waiters were readily available to bring more drinks or assist with the menu and were extremely pleasant. Could not fault this venue and will definately be a repeat diner.
