Sunny and sexy, this beach-facing eatery constantly outperforms its 'bistro' label, as Shane Bailey's (ex-Donovans, Melbourne) mod-Mediterranean meets mod-Oz food more than competes with the sandy outlook. The less-formal sibling to Berardo's Restaurant shines with such mains as roasted snapper with saffron fennel, ruby grapefruit and salsa verde, while breakfast also gets some serious attention. Book ahead, especially if you want one of the coveted outdoor tables.

Disappointed!
Expected a pleasant meal from this bistro's reputation. Worst seafood risotto I've ever had. Rice had not absorbed the liquid, a very acid tomato concentrate taste, fish pieces not trimmed of the brown and grey bits, did not have the taste of any fish stock having been used, cheese taste was unappealing, prawns looked and tasted like pre-cooked/frozen, no silkiness at all from a butter finish, and served with a chunk of lemon(?) complete with pips. Its one partly redeeming feature was the mussels of which there were three in the shell and quite tasty.

Should have been better
Went to Berardos on the Beach for brunch with high hopes, after a superlative dinner at the bigger Berardos (bistro) a few nights earlier.
While the food was excellent and you can see the relationship in the quality of ingredients, the service really let the place down. The service was slack - in a half empty restaurant, we were placed at the bar to wait (at 10am) and then given a very ordinary table - possibly because we weren't quite beautiful enough for the junior staff.
The special was sold out, but when this was made clear, the board wasn't updated and we heard several other people try and order it. There was no attempt to clear the tables quicky - ours or any other, circuits of the restaurant took place in a daze. We waited too long to order and had to catch someone's attention to order our coffees, even though we had been sitting on empty plates for over five minutes. And with the pace only a third full, there was no excluse.
Go to Berardos for the great food, fabulous bloody Mary and lovely spot. If you're gorgeous, well known or wearing lots of bling - you might get good service. Otherwise, go, but be prepared to be patient.
