If you find yourself all dressed up with nowhere to go and are itching for a night out with a difference, one fun option could be the old-school, global Japanese institution, slightly kitsch yet ever-reliable Benihana. Separate to the Marriott Resort but located within the hotel on the third level, Benihana's teppanyaki chefs deliver lively entertainment and, most importantly, create works of culinary art worthy of an Iron Chef cameo. Spoil your palate rotten with the flavour-intense onion soup, followed by the Benihana salad and then your choice of hibachi chicken, steak or seafood with steamed rice. If your sweet tooth overrides your full tummy (that will also be aching from laughing at the antics of the teppanyaki chefs), you have the choice of novelty desserts like tempura ice cream or deep-fried banana, which you can wash down with a mouthful of steaming green tea. Or for a bigger night out, Benihana offers Australian-brewed Go Shu sake to complement each menu choice.

Average teppanyaki
I've been eating at genuine teppanyaki restaurants for 20 years, so I would like to think in this time I've garned enough experience eating at the grill to comment on Benihana.
If you have not eaten teppanyaki, you will enjoy this dining experience. If you have eaten teppanyaki and it's been good teppanyaki, I'd suggest going elsewhwere.
As an entree to our teppanyaki at Benihana, we excitedly ordered a California roll. It's been some years since I have seen this roll listed with its key ingredient as crab meat (not the crab/seafood stick version today), however, upon its arrival, I was immediately disappointed to see seafood stick. I asked the waiter to send it back on the grounds that it listed crab meat as its main ingredient not seafood stick on their menu, she insisted that the roll in front of me was what I had ordered, until she politely inspected the menu to find out that I was in fact right.
The Gold Coast has many great Japanese restaurants; this one is just okay.
