Beethoven

A much-loved institution in Perth, this warm, family-run, elegant German restaurant prides itself on serving highly traditional German and European dishes. The old-fashioned interior is also convincingly European in style, with booths, tiled flooring and a dome in the ceiling complete with mural. Some of the culinary highlights include authentic veal Wiener schnitzel, beef goulash, and schweinebraten (braised pork in a homemade sauce with red cabbage and a dumpling). There's a separate menu for the kinder, too.

Huge Servings
We had the schnitzel (good) with mushroom sauce (salty), the pork knuckle which was a bit dry, the steak was very good and the goulash was great. Service was good. We were put into a booth to start with but when we asked if we could move they were happy to oblige. The sweets were delicious.

lovely gem of a restaurant
We have eaten here several times in the last 2 years and have been happy each time.
The layout is very nice, not too crowded and I love the booths for couples. The staff is just lovely, very friendly and polite which make you feel very welcome.

The menu is not extensive, but have a good choice. We have tried most of the meals and you always leave full as the servings are of a good size.
Although some would consider it expensive, I think its worth paying the little extra for the service and atmosphere.

Dinner at Beethovens
Relief as the restaurant has a choice of BYO and fully licencsed.
The entrees we chose were delicious and a great hit. My choice of salmon for the mains were well worth it, the salmon was perfectley cooked and of a brilliant red colour instead of the pink I am used to having. My partners main was not quite as good but still enjoyable. In the end we were too full for desert overall a good experience.

Wunderba
My girlfriend and i wanted to try something different. We found Beethoven on the internet and had a look at their website. The menu looked very interesting and tasty.

When we arrived we were pleasantly greeted by a lovely waitress who sat us in one of the comfy booths. At first glance the restaurant is beautifully decorated with large pillars and the colours work very well with the wooden tables and bar.

When given our menus I studied through the large variety of entrees including a seafood platter that was stacked with oysters, smoked salmon, herring and other delicatessen staples. ( I had this). I read through to the mains which also had many options - not just German - from chicken and beef, lamb to fish.

Our wine came out promptly, a bottle of Wignals Pinot ( $45 ) and it was stunning, It was an excellent suggestion by our hostess. The entrees arrived quite fast considering the restaurant was very full. Excellent. The seafood platter was everything and more.

Once the entrees were clear it was not too long after that the mains arrived. In my opinion it was a little bit fast. I was still digesting all the seafood when I was greeted by my main order of a pork shank. All I can say was it was total value for money. The pork was a crisp outer layer with a tender core where the meat was falling from the bone. It was absolutely delicious. My girlfriend had the chicken breast on risotto which was cooked to perfection

All in all it was a very enjoyable evening. The service was extremely prompt and the staff were very friendly. We even got to thank the chef for a brilliant meal.

Too expensive
We really wanted to like this restaurant and as we live in the area want to support local businesses. We looked for reviews beforehand and only found the two on this website which both were not good but still gave it a go.

The restaurant's website says it has a "beautiful, modern but elegant look". This wasn't the case at all with the dining chairs straight out of a cheap 80's Flag Inn breakfast buffet. The restaurant was half full with nearly all the customers the blue rinse set who would have been Applecross locals and probably wouldn't have minded the decor.

The menu is fantastic in that there were many dishes that sounded delicious so made it hard to choose. The mains were pricey with most $35-$40 which is getting into fine dining prices and this isn't that kind of restaurant at all. As it wasn't busy our meals came out very quickly. So quick in fact that by the time we arrived, ate, paid and left it was all done within an hour! The food arrived and looked great. Both mains were too salty and one was drowned in oil. For $35+ you want a meal experience that makes you go mmmmm. We'd agree with the other review that said this is the type of stuff you could make at home so you feel cheated when you have to pay so much for it. The meals weren't terrible but they weren't great either.

The service was good. The waitstaff were friendly and attentive.

Would we go back? No. German food is wholesome and stodgy but to pay what they're charging for average tasting food when you can go to many other restaurants and have a much better experience for the same price just isn't worth it. We dine out a bit so know a good feed when we see it. Beethoven needs to drop their prices, probably re-brand and modernise the restaurant to get the punters to give them another go. Maybe then they'll be full like a good venue should be. If Gordon Ramsay ever did his show in Perth Beethoven would be a perfect candidate. They've got the elements there but just need some tweaking to ensure it's a great local.

Poor food lets it down
We went out for a fine dining experience as they suggested on their website, and found a great atmosphere and a lovely looking restaurant.
Unfortunetly there where four flies that just would not leave us alone. But that's life and we beared this. Then came out the food and our experience just died. There was only six people in the restaurant, so we thought the chef would have time to make sure it was special food coming from his kitchen.
We ordered the garlic bread that was drenched in butter and lacked flavour. My wife had the mushroom pasta, with shop pasta and generally poor all round. I had the $37 rib eye steak, that had more sinew and fat than steak, very poor indeed, they need to find a new butcher. The vegetables were also below par, as the broccoli had gone to flour and the brussel sprouts were more like small cabbages. All in all I will not be back, which is a shame as the chef had let down what could be a great night out.

Way overpriced!
One of my best friends decided to have her 30th birthday dinner at this restaurant because she loves German food. We did a bit of research, and the menu online looked great, if a bit pricey. Upon arrival, we found out it was even price-ier! The website has not been updated for a long time, it seems.

All mains were $35+. Sure, Perth is getting really expensive to eat out, but for $35+ I'm expecting something a bit special. What we received was definitely not special: very much things you could cook yourself at home, and possibly with better produce. $38.50 for over-cooked venison, mashed potato and cabbage? Come on! And the fact that the waitress had to come around and re-take our orders 20mins after we originally gave them was not reassuring either.
