Just outside of Melbourne's cafe-congested CBD, Bedi's Indian Restaurant has cornered a quiet place on Park Street to continue providing quality and authentic Indian cuisine as it has done for the past 26 years. The table settings are clean and white beside colourful, decor with embossed wall adornments, dusty pink paintwork, plaster cornices and wall runners. These give the dining space an Edwardian feel a little at odds with the large plasma TV blasting sports events for fanatics eager not to miss a score during dinner. Though one suspects that it is these kind of touches, and welcoming service, that make Bedi's a popular haunt for locals - not to mention Davinder Singh Bedi's multi-award-winning recipes (such as the famous butter chicken cream) which have seen him receive national acclaim and guest chef spots on televised cooking and variety shows.

Butter Chicken specialists I think?
I haven't been here for a long time, it use to be good, not so good this time. We went on a Sunday, my birthday, and found no matter what we ordered(Garlic naan the exception) it tasted bland. I attempted to ask my waiter if they made something with a lot of cardamon(my favourite) and he just stared at me blankly. I wish I tried the vindaloo but chose the rojan josh, my fault. The meat was well stewed but the sauce had nothing going on. And my sister whom ordered some vegetable curry also received what looked and tasted like the same dark brown flavourless sauce. The patrons seated next to us said only order the butter chicken as that's all they get because it's the only decent meal. One of us did have it, the others wish they had. We ordered dry and rubbery tandoori prawns that looked like they simply had red dye dripped over them. Food is a little expensive for Indian so we demand it should be tasty, sadly it was far removed from that. I know Bedi's can do better than this, I will try their food again once more. Starting to think dining on a Sunday is verbotten!

Always good......
A group of us have been eating Bedi's tucker for the best part of 30 years. Nothing has changed, despite the fact Bedi and Rita are rarely seen these days. One gripe I do have though is that $7.00 for a Boags light is not light at all........Hmmm, and the samosas are getting smaller But, we will continue to go.
