What a surly lot we are
Had a fabulous dinner at B.coz last night with a couple of others who continue to enjoy each of our visits over a period of time. Love to see the developments and changes, as well as the food and menu dishes that make you think a bit. Anyone can be critical, but you need a little intelligence to criticise honestly and with knowledge. A couple of examples: a lamb shoulder braise on sweet potato mash needed a bit of seasoning, to my palate - a sprinkle of salt (good heavens)and pepper made the flavours explode for me. Some seared scallops on a blue vein risotto were a little undercooked in the rice department for me - my mate next to me loved it. The dish was still extremely enjoyable. Sometimes I think we infect each other with our ill-considered comments. My 1997 Chateau d'Yquem that we had with a very special apple & pear tart with a couple of house made icecreams, particularly the honeycomb, wasn't up to my expectations, but we still drank it and appreciated it for what it was. At $256.00 a half bottle cost (wholesale), a somewhat expensive learning exercise. But then again, I have been doing that for the past 40 years and I am still learning.
The ambience, service and food offered by B.coz is still amongst the best in Melbourne and therefore the world in my opinion.
I'm glad to have taken myself away from the types who make some of the preceding comments. They will continue to be the bane of good operators, but good operators already well know their business.
Keep up the excellent work. As you already recognise, you have many who hold you in high respect.

Overpriced
I recently visited Melbourne to sample what their fine dining had to offer and one restaurant caught my eye when I searched - Bcoz, offering organic fine dining. The restaurant sits on a main road and the all glass window front creates a far from fine dining atmosphere. It feels like a Lygon Street cafe, which are great but never pretend to be anything else than a cafe. The wine list was extensive as I had heard, but also almost intimidating for those people that don't have a good wine knowledge. Again are handed a novel-sized menu - regular menu, gluten-free,lactose-free, etc, often with the same items on the menu. I ordered the bug meat salad ($22 - remember it is a salad) which was nice and the vinaigrette was very complementary to the dish. Next was the eye fillet which was only okay. For a price tag of $39 for a streak you expect to be blown away but all I could think of was that this is so not worth my money. It seemed small and unfufilling. It was nothing more than a regular steak that I could cook at home. Organics I realise can be expensive and will reflect in the price, but fine dining is more than just small portions, they need to create something special. Waiting staff are one redeeming feature as they are very nice and helpful.
