At first glance, Bay Leaf Bistro seems a pretty unassuming place. Classic, understated decor and a lack of the lurid, flashing signs adorning other venues on the busy restaurant strip mean it would be easy to walk by without even noticing this small restaurant/cafe. However, to do so would mean missing out on one of Hobart's more unique eating experiences.
Proprietors Max and Regina Zimmerli have brought from their native Switzerland an eclectic and thoroughly stylish European eating experience. The menu features fare from their native cuisine, with clear influences from the German, French and Italian cultures that make up the melting pot of their homeland. They have also added to the menu the best that their new home has to offer, with local beef and seafood (particularly salmon) proudly displayed. If the only things you associate with Switzerland are cheese and lederhosen, prepare to be pleasantly surprised. Just as Switzerland is a country rich in many cultural influences, so Bay Leaf is diverse and much more dynamic than its inconspicuous design would have you believe.
Another drawcard of the Bay Leaf is its strong focus on serving those with specific dietary requirements. They offer a great selection of vegan and vegetarian options, and you'll be hard pressed to find a better restaurant in Hobart for gluten-free and coeliac-friendly dining, with a whole separate menu for gluten-free food.
