Bay 88 is a lodestar, of sorts, for those in need of escape. Sitting on the border of Rushcutters Bay and Kings Cross, it's the first sign of civility after exiting the overbearing sense of depravity present in most corners of KX. Once you spot Bay 88 you can look forward to fresh air and lush parklands.
But to use this cafe just as a guidepost wouldn't nearly do it justice. Inside you'll find gourmet cafe fare that equals or surpasses that of most cafes in Sydney: Think offerings like artisan cheese plates, Mediterranean-style braised octopus and spinach gnudi and you'll get the picture.
It should come as no surprise then to find that several of the staff, including co-owner Daniel Bloom, have spent time in the talent pool of Damien Pignolet's Bistro Moncur. The fare may be slightly less high end (we can't see Damien serving up plates of bacon to dogs anytime soon) but the attention to detail and execution is on par with the Woollahra stalwart.
Throw in the freshly approved liquor license coupled with an intelligent wine list and this Bayswater Road newcomer looks set for a long and prosperous career nurturing escapees back to health.
