The Bavarian Bier Cafe venues collectively offer beer fiends an upmarket front for their passion, akin to the status enjoyed by wine connoisseurs. While the cafes do often feature crowds of enthusiastic beer drinkers hefting massive steins, they avoid the stigma of raucous beer halls by presenting their biers and schnitzel in luxe designer spaces such as this heritage-listed former bank.
The grandiose art deco premises of the O'Connell Street branch retains many dramatic original features, such as a dizzyingly high vaulted ceiling and pendant lighting. These are complemented by bold swathes of marble and chocolate leather and punctuated by cheeky touches such as the huge antler chandeliers above the downstairs bar and the bathrooms tiled in oversized snakeskin print.
The restaurant is located at basement level, trading the breathtaking art deco features for a warm and homely (yet still stylish) space of communal tables and a bustling open kitchen. The menu features rich Bavarian fare such as the Lowenbrau Dunkel beef pie or baked cheese spatzle and a few Germanic favourites with a Sydney twist, such as soft shell crab schnitzel. Naturally, bier is still the main event, with a range of six draught and 12 bottled Bavarian brews available to wash down the hearty fare.

Pork belly
Bavarian food is famous for its pork bellies or legs with crackling skin. I always order the pork belly here as the apple sauce is awesome. However I've ordered the pork belly two times (second time to hope for an improvement in the pork crackling). Both times the pork skin wasn't crackly enough. Apart from that the dish is great. Great atmosphere, however the bench seating is a little awkward to access in and out of. Interesting beer range of lychee, chocolate or mango.
