Basilico

Basilico offers the epitome of chic, modern Italian dining with original recipes developed over the past few years by owner, George Loupos, and prepared daily by a bevy of talented chefs. The decor features a striking tile mosaic leading to a central skylight above the capacious dining space fitted in grey and chrome lit by a warmly glowing woodfire oven, which turns out the thin-based gourmet pizzas the restaurant is renowned for. This place is family-friendly and the dishes are very reasonably priced for the quality and upmarket location.

On offer you'll find homemade lasagne, cannelloni, agnolotti, gnocchi, tortellini and six traditional sauces, as well as seafood, avocado, pumpkin and spinach based risotto recipes. Veal parmigiana or al vino bianco (pan-fried veal medallions, mushrooms, cream, fresh parsley and white wine with garlic) and seafood crepes with white wine and cream stand out from the selection of mains but it's the focaccias and pizzas which are Loupos' specialty. Try the Basilico special with tomato, cheese, leg ham, cacciotore salami, bocconcini, roast peppers, Spanish and spring onion, capers and garlic; the spicy Tandoori chicken; or the ortolana with tomato, cheese, fetta, mushrooms, sundried tomato, oregano, cracked pepper, Spanish onions and garlic.

Anyone for desserts?
We went in just for coffee and desserts and were pleasantly surprised! One of the best homemade desserts in Melbourne - in particular the creme caramel and the tiramisu.
