Basil Leaves

Flowering Jacaranda trees. Fountains on a tranquil lake. A quaint little bridge crossing a babbling brook. It sounds like a scene from the Lord of The Rings, though you're unlikely to bump into any hobbits at this reasonably priced lakeside cafe. Cambodian-born owner Kim Tan together with former Hans Cafe chef Va Tin has created an innovative Asian menu. All told, there are more than 100 dishes to choose from, most of them Thai-influenced, many around the $10 mark, and all presented with considerable flair.

The fresh-flavoured rice paper-wrapped prawn and vegetarian cold rolls are a must-try, as are the signature tamarind prawns, slow-cooked in the chef's own-made chilli paste and served with cashew nuts and snowpeas. The impressive sizzling fish is a feast of prawns, squid, scallops and vegetables for $18. To finish, indulge in the banana sago pudding and immerse yourself in the tranquil and rather ritzy surroundings of East Brook Village.

Disappointing experience - and not so cheap.
My companions and I booked for 8.45pm, and were told that we must be on time as that was the latest we could book. Arrived 8.35pm. Got menus just before 9pm.

Despite our request for non-chilli food (yes a bit of an ask at a Thai restaurant) guess what we got. Yep. Chilli in three of the four main courses.

Forgot one of the two entrees. It arrived after the first two main courses were on the table. Our request for steamed rice was pointless: it never arrived. But they did try to charge us for it nonetheless!

'Blanket prawns', thin transparent prawns wrapped in spring-roll pastry, were dry and unappetising.

'Udon noodles with beef' came out very peppery (after being told it would be suitable for chilli-intolerant palates) and the beef was dry, tough and not a lot of it.

Putting the chilli-issue to one side (I quite enjoy chilli, but one of the trio does not) the food overall was a disappointment. Strong on heat, weak on flavour. Unimaginative and overcooked. I've found noodle-houses which could do the same food better for half the price in a more engaging atmosphere.

Cheap and cheerful
I live in the area an used to regularly eat at This restaurant when it opened (a few years ago). Back then the food quality was great! Unfortunately, recently I've found the food to be pretty hit and miss. I've had some good meals there (enough to keep me coming back), but lately the quality/standard of the food seems to have dropped. Not enough to totally turn me off, but definitely enough to reduce my patronage (now roughly once every few months).

The location is great, food prices are cheap, and the Royal Bar is just 20m away.

Definitely cheap and cheerful.
