Open a traditional Szechuan restaurant in the CBD - no problem. Opening one in Carnegie is a bit more of a stretch. It may sound like hospitality suicide but that's exactly what the folks at Bashuge have done - and it seems to be working.
Contained within their modern art deco surrounds on Koornang Road, Bashuge quietly but confidently goes about the business of creating traditional Szechuan cuisine, and nuts to anyone who wants different.
If you're familiar with this style of food then you'll know chilli heat plays a big role. Fresh, dried, fermented and pickled chillies all play their part in making up the ode to the traditions of regional Chinese cooking that is the menu here.
If you're after something familiar and safe then you'd best keep walking to one of the plethora of "westernised" Asian diners Carnegie already boasts. If not, then strap yourself in for some traditional fare that gives the Scoville scale a good nudge.
