Bar Idda

Like a slice of Sicily in the beating heart of Lygon Street, Bar Idda marks an exciting venture into authentic Sicilian recipes, honed by the familial experiences of owner/chef Alfredo La Spina. At affordable prices, Bar Idda offers simple and traditional fare, from purpetti (meatballs) cooked with cinnamon and tomato, to homemade pork and fennel sausages, to much-loved side dishes like capunata - an eggplant relish. Most of the bar offerings are Italian and Sicilian, including the Sicilian after-dinner digestive liqueur Amaro Averna, and plenty of Italian beers. With its table and bar seating, Bar Idda offers a casual and cool environment for frequenters of Brunswick East.

It's, um ok.
Open space, clean walls, trendy crockery and some fun Italian stuff. Shame, shame, shame it's a little boring in the ol' food department. Oh and a gormless waiter don't help. I want food and drink. And I want it bloody quick. Offer me a drink for Christ sakes. And if your going to give me water glasses fill them with water, don't leave them staring at me. Also, if you can't fill it faster than I drink it, then leave a bottle with me. I griping, I know, I'm a winger. Pppffffttt, that's me. I wanna be served.
So food... Arinici, boring. They taste dull and lifeless. Couscous with rabbit, eh ok. Not bad. Broccoli was alright. And we had something else with sultanas. Everything had bloody sultanas in it. Look there was some tasty stuff, but nothing that said "hoooo haa, sonny Jim, eat me now!". And that's what I want this food to say to me. And I want it to sing it. In tune.

The minimal wine list is just Ok, but c'mon, give me some more options. The only good thing was that lack of options prevented me spending too much money.
Desserts were ok. Bah, the joints cool, but I'm bored. Spice up the food.

Disappointing
Overall I was expecting better ,The arancini were tasty but the rice was overcooked and mashy ,the peas broad bean and artichoke frittata was terrible it tasted like the vegies were frozen and then boiled you needed a microscope to see the artichokes ,the orange and fennel salad was ok but very small serving enough for one person , the cannoli were very nice ,also the menu does not have much to choose from.

Cute, simple and cheap
Tried this restaurant after reading some decent reviews. The atmosphere is vibrant and cheerful. Great mish mash of old crockery. Service was attentive, professional and not in your face. In terms of food, the arancini balls were to die for - my favorite by far. The ragu pasta was tasty. The fried sardines was a little too 'fishy' for my liking. The meatballs were homely - perhaps a little sweet cooked with cinnamon and currants. The chicken with bitter dark chocolate was interesting - reminded me of a mexican dish.
Anyway, we had quite the feast so I think this place is great value. Would go back for the arancini balls, but given the limited menu, they would need to change the menu before i would go back.

Welcome to Sicily's mammas kitchen
Just newly open, I had to try a place that claims to be authenic sicilian, and oh my god I was in my nonnas kitchen. I had real arancini balls with peas, mozzarella and ragu. We had freshly sliced salami 'casalinga' with bread and olives it sounds simple and it is but so many places try instead of given us a good product to start with. It was quite the night I went however I have heard you now have to book..im happy for them.
