Claiming the title of St Kilda's most homely bar and restaurant, this moodily-lit space - filled with knick-knacks, mismatched furniture and wood-finished everything, as well as free Wi Fi access - might just be right.
There is a general feeling that a place like Banff could only exist in St Kilda, and judging from the strong following of local clientele it's hard to disagree. Walking into Banff feels like walking into your eccentric history professor's study. Bare brick walls are adorned with messily-scrawled blackboards, and strange labels (indecipherable to all but the person who wrote them) mark each of the countless bottled lining the shelves.
The only discernable difference is that you're less likely to have someone lecture you on the key mistakes which led to the fall of the Roman empire, and the food is much better, particularly the chilli squid pizza with garlic, lemon, capers, fetta and rocket.
