Food was brilliant - Service was worst in Perth
We went to Balthazar last friday night for our anniversary. The food was fantastic, he had the tasting plate and crab for entree. For our mains, my partner had the Lamb Ribs and I had the Pork Shoulder - which were both amazing. The biggest let down was the service. The waitress who greeted us was fantastic, helping us choose entree and wines. Then we had another waitress, and she may rate as the worst waitress in Perth. She ignored us the whole night. Filled our wine glasses once (then left our white wine out of the ice so it warmed up nicely), then i had to help my self. She didn't even offer more wine when our bottle was finished. Took 25 minutes to clear our plates when we were done, and then she had the gaul to drop (yes DROP!) desserts menus on our table whilst she walked by. What actually upset me more, however, is the guys in business suits and the americans at the next table got impeccable service. I can handle poor service (if it is consistent) but it is really upsetting when the service is CLEARLY tip chasing and rates her customers! I will never return, and would recommend ANYONE who wants a fantastic TOTAL dinning experience to go to Star Anise, Jacksons or the Loose Box.

A Perth gem
Balthazar - what a great little gem! I actually think for populous size, Perth is quite spoilt for quality of restaurants compared to eastern cities.
Extremely high quality food for the reasonable price, I would say that the average main price was $38, and which I had the aged beef thought was an exceptional price. Portions were perfect.
I was a little disarmed at the reception we got, we arrived possibly in the last booking time for the evening 8pm for dinner, and it took a while to get us seated, and as anyone who has been there knows there isn't really a great deal of space for standing. We were aware that we didn't have a table, but were sitting at the heightened, bar tables, but was not yet set for us. I felt like a cocktail to start off with as many Melbourne women do, but to my horror they didn't have cranberry juice, so no cosmopolitan (please rectify this!). But quite delightfully they had a superb by the glass listing of French bubbles I have never tasted. Fantastic!
So when we finally had our first round and were set up, in came the waiter who really made the evening exceptional (Dan). His knowledge of the wines and menu selection was outstanding. The couple who brought me here are highly well versed in wines from around the globe, and Dan was able to match their wines to their meal selections better than they could, and offer them wines they had never tasted before. Such says the wine list and Dan's food to wine matching skills are any food and wine connoisseur's delectable dream!
The ambience is great, but the lighting is a little too dark... more tea light candles would be fantastic.

Easy to rave about
I finally went to dine at Balthazar (which has been on the wish list forever). Dining as part of the second sitting, my partner and I arrived at 9pm sharp and were offered drinks at the bar. The bartender was not confident of her beverage knowledge but keen to seek out answer to any questions. We finally sat down at 10.15 (not a good sign!).
The menu is splendid. For entrees we shared the twice-baked souffle (overcooked, fairly average and too spongy) as well as the scallops which were of a perfect consistency accompanied by a wilted salad/coleslaw.
For mains we had the aged beef fillet, which was actually cooked medium rare (a difficult request for most Perth restaurant, but certainly executed by Balthazar) and I had the venison, which was incorrectly described by our waitress but was incredible! The venison was minute seared, the flavours were amazing, it was cooked well, hot with a pepper sauce and just so wonderful!
The only thing is, they never answer their phone at night, so if you want to book for that evening (which is fairly difficult to do anyway due to its popularity) do call during/after lunch.
