Balthazar

Balthazar has been at the top of its game for more than a decade now and has a swag of awards to prove it, including top five Perth restaurant and Gourmet Traveller 'Wine List of the Year' 2009.

Housed in the historic Lawson building, the heritage sandstone facade matches perfectly with the intimate lighting and modern European cuisine to give Balthazar its timeless appeal. The signature aged beef fillet is still one of the best to be found in Perth and is hard to go past on a seasonal menu filled with stellar options. A clear winner from the dessert menu is similarly hard to pick, but it would almost be a shame to pass up the Balthazar cheese plate. Three full-bodied cheeses with muscatels and a chunk of slow-spreading honeycomb, perfectly matched to a drop from the award-winning 400-strong wine list, are hard to beat for rounding out your meal.

Balthazaar - Excellent Mains & Dining Experience
Well I'm glad I got the opportunity to be taken out and to also finally eat at Balthazar. My mains were delicious and I enjoyed the different flavours of the pork loin, rabbit Bolognese and borlotti beans plus the delicious bread. The servings need to be beefed up as they are more on the small side. The sides of vegetables were passable but not that great. The friendly and attentive service in the comfortable surroundings make the dining experience worthwhile and a place you would feel like coming back.

Wonderful evening - as usual
Superb. Still one of my favourite restaurants in Perth. 4 of us on a packed sat night - very good service (great recommendations on the excellent wine list, including offering one of our party something from a bottle not actually on the 'by the glass' list, which was a very nice touch). Great grazing plate to share, fantastic mains and dessert. A wonderful evening; our friends hadn't visited before and vowed to go back again on their own.

The Fitzy Boys Loved It
Went to visit my dad in Perth and he was jumpng up and down about this place. Being from Melb and having lived in Perth I was a little worried. But right form the get go I wasnt let down. Started out with a few beeers and then moved to the dining area. Cracked a great bottle of red and we ordered a tasting plate. It was SUPERB. I'd love to be able to say what was the best, but they were all so great. Moved which was just as impressive. The red finished and we moved onto the cheese plate for desert with a few ports. I was loving it. Highly recommend the place.....

Food was brilliant - Service was worst in Perth
We went to Balthazar last friday night for our anniversary. The food was fantastic, he had the tasting plate and crab for entree. For our mains, my partner had the Lamb Ribs and I had the Pork Shoulder - which were both amazing. The biggest let down was the service. The waitress who greeted us was fantastic, helping us choose entree and wines. Then we had another waitress, and she may rate as the worst waitress in Perth. She ignored us the whole night. Filled our wine glasses once (then left our white wine out of the ice so it warmed up nicely), then i had to help my self. She didn't even offer more wine when our bottle was finished. Took 25 minutes to clear our plates when we were done, and then she had the gaul to drop (yes DROP!) desserts menus on our table whilst she walked by. What actually upset me more, however, is the guys in business suits and the americans at the next table got impeccable service. I can handle poor service (if it is consistent) but it is really upsetting when the service is CLEARLY tip chasing and rates her customers! I will never return, and would recommend ANYONE who wants a fantastic TOTAL dinning experience to go to Star Anise, Jacksons or the Loose Box.

OK but could be better.
We attended this well known venue on recomendation. The service was great, the atmosphere very pleasant but food was a little dissapointing. Our entree choice of tasting plate was very tasty but small, bread was great. My main, duck was quite undercooked and chewy and was returned and swapped for a steak. My partners salmon was underdone. The brule for dessert was excellent.Maybe a Monday night is not the best to visit.

A little bit of New York in Perth
Atmosphere is always right; the lighting is perfect. Service is swift, professional and the wait staff know their stuff.

The food is outstanding. Unusual, brave menu - perfectly executed.

Thank you - a great night!

very good
you could think you are somewhere in melbourne with this place. dimly lit, lots of noise and upbeat. the staff are precise and efficient in a casual type of way and the wine list oozes with style and choice.
the food was small but great and the prices reflected there size. the servings more then likely cater toward the business crowd which whilst i enjoyed the experience is more suited towards.

OMG
I was treated to Balthazar's on July 18, 2008 for my 50th birthday by 2 very special friends. I was impressed from the moment we entered Balthazar's, the pre-dinner drinks service was prompt and attentive. This restaurant is loaded with ambiance and style. The lighting and the music is just right. We ventured to our table for dinner when we were ready, the waiters were prompt, helpful and stylish. Congratulations to the chef James Morgan, our food was created to perfection and well presented. I enjoyed a tasting plate, beef and doughnut for dessert. I cannot fault any aspect of Balthazar's. I noticed the Maitre'd kept an eye on everything and this also impressed me as he wasn't obvious but highly professional. It was a special night for me.

Top shelf
This was my second visit to Balthazar and on both occasions I have been extremely impressed with the quality of the restaurant.

The whole experience was excellent, from the service offered during pre-dinner drinks to the meal and the attentiveness of the waitstaff.

While it may be on the pricey side, I think you would be hard-pressed to find many other Perth restaurants that are able to meet expectations as well as this one.

Plus, if you like your wines, the staff have an intimate knowledge of the extremely lengthy list on offer.

Next time you're looking for a place for that special occasion, look no further.

The guy knows his wine...
The place was packed with millionaires (and billionaires, just quietly) doing lunchtime deals, no doubt, but we mere mortals on a girls' pre-Christmas lunch were treated to just as much attentive service as the next tables. Wine is offered by the glass in many instances and if you're just not too sure as to what to pick, the extremely helpful sommelier will offer you a taste test in a glass along with expert commentary so you can be happy with your choice. The food was divine... but then, you always know it will be if you dine at Balthazar.

A Perth gem
Balthazar - what a great little gem! I actually think for populous size, Perth is quite spoilt for quality of restaurants compared to eastern cities.

Extremely high quality food for the reasonable price, I would say that the average main price was $38, and which I had the aged beef thought was an exceptional price. Portions were perfect.

I was a little disarmed at the reception we got, we arrived possibly in the last booking time for the evening 8pm for dinner, and it took a while to get us seated, and as anyone who has been there knows there isn't really a great deal of space for standing. We were aware that we didn't have a table, but were sitting at the heightened, bar tables, but was not yet set for us. I felt like a cocktail to start off with as many Melbourne women do, but to my horror they didn't have cranberry juice, so no cosmopolitan (please rectify this!). But quite delightfully they had a superb by the glass listing of French bubbles I have never tasted. Fantastic!

So when we finally had our first round and were set up, in came the waiter who really made the evening exceptional (Dan). His knowledge of the wines and menu selection was outstanding. The couple who brought me here are highly well versed in wines from around the globe, and Dan was able to match their wines to their meal selections better than they could, and offer them wines they had never tasted before. Such says the wine list and Dan's food to wine matching skills are any food and wine connoisseur's delectable dream!

The ambience is great, but the lighting is a little too dark... more tea light candles would be fantastic.

Well worth it
My partner and I visited this Restaurant for the first time and were very surprised with the attention to detail with presentation and service. One criticism would be that the bar was not able to provide common cocktails. The food was excellent. Will definitely recommend.

Easy to rave about
I finally went to dine at Balthazar (which has been on the wish list forever). Dining as part of the second sitting, my partner and I arrived at 9pm sharp and were offered drinks at the bar. The bartender was not confident of her beverage knowledge but keen to seek out answer to any questions. We finally sat down at 10.15 (not a good sign!).

The menu is splendid. For entrees we shared the twice-baked souffle (overcooked, fairly average and too spongy) as well as the scallops which were of a perfect consistency accompanied by a wilted salad/coleslaw.

For mains we had the aged beef fillet, which was actually cooked medium rare (a difficult request for most Perth restaurant, but certainly executed by Balthazar) and I had the venison, which was incorrectly described by our waitress but was incredible! The venison was minute seared, the flavours were amazing, it was cooked well, hot with a pepper sauce and just so wonderful!

The only thing is, they never answer their phone at night, so if you want to book for that evening (which is fairly difficult to do anyway due to its popularity) do call during/after lunch.

BALTHAZAR NOT HOT
I visited Balthazar just over 12 months ago and was very impressed by the whole experience.
Tonight was a very different story. The restaurant was noisy with the live music over the top. Way too loud to carry on a conversation easily. I had one of the specials of the night which was supposed to be steamed snapper. No way was this fish snapper. No taste, flavour and tough with no flake to the fish and with no salt or cracked pepper offered on the table or by staff, there was not much to improve the blandness of this meal. My partner had the beef which he liked although a little on the rare side for "medium". The wine list, although extensive lacked some decently priced wine and West Australian variety. The whole experience was hard work and disappointing for the prices charged.
