Bahn Thai

Part of the upmarket Cullen Bay precinct, this enormous Thai eatery boasts a waterside deck, ideal for steamy evenings. The decor is pleasantly traditional, with wall hangings and gold statues. The seafood-focused menu suits the briny location; the barramundi is a favourite, though the seafood stir-fry with Thai basil is equally loved. The well-stocked bar carries plenty of local and imported beers, plus a decent array of wines and spirits.

Good try Bahn but not quite Thai
A well established and still very popular venue but starting to show its age.
Service was good, after catching the eye of staff.
My wife and I were part of a group of 6. Between us all we ordered the fish cakes, vegetable spring rolls, Tom Yum Goong soup, fried fish with garlic and chilli, beef mussaman, lamb with garlic, stir fried vegetables and rice with chicken. For sweets some ordered banana splits and others ordered glutinous rice and coconut milk (a ball of velvety rice encasing a dollop of palm sugar).
The food was well presented which had us all anticipating the taste.
To our disappointment some of the meals really did not live up to their expectations.
The beef mussaman lacked body in flavour; the fried fish was obviously frozen imported product that was over cooked. The stir fried vegetables were nothing more than vegetables steamed in stock and the rice with chicken was simply that rice with chicken .
However the Tom Yum Goong soup was superb and our friends gave a big thumbs up for the lamb.
The glutinous rice with coconut milk was to die for. A real treat and something I have not had the pleasure of trying in the past.
So, overall we all came away with mixed feelings about the food and the restaurant in general.
In the dry season its best to get a table by the water, for the breezes make for a much more pleasant experience. In the wet season an air conditioned seat inside is advisable.
My wife and I chose a bottle of wine off the more than adequate and well priced wine list.
Others said the house red was great and so too was the coffee.
The restaurant allowed us to split the bill three ways, which is not always the case for many restaurants.
All up not bad value for money at $56 per head.
I doubt there would be a better Thai restaurant in Darwin, but I m still working my way around.
Great Thai food for Aussies.

Good Thai
What a great location right on the bay. Food was fantastic especially the duck salad. Wouldn't recommend the oysters entree!! Service was a bit slow we had to cancel the last order. But overall would go back again.

Authentic Thai
Bahn Thai is in a gret location at Cullen Bay overlooking the water. The food menu is extensive with a good variety. The wine list is more the middle to bottom end with reasonable proces. Many of the dishes are not your standard Thai fare. The staff are friendly and fairly good, however newer younger staff are unfamilar with the wines.
