Tuck into contemporary European cuisine and soak up some history at the same time at Bacchus, which occupies one of Newcastle's heritage buildings. This grand structure began life as a Methodist mission but is most famed as a theatre, complete with a 60-foot ceiling and chandeliers, where Dame Nellie Melba once performed in the 1920s.
Thoroughly contemporary, the menu covers decadent delicacies such as Tajima wagyu beef with brisket, potato, leek and roast shallot. The dessert menu is too good to miss, serving wonders such as a Valrhona marquise with peanut butter soil, caramel ice-cream and brulee banana.
Savour its flavours in the grand dining room with lavish, hand-cut mahogany tables, casually lunch on the terrace or recline in the leather- and velvet-clad lounge with a few plates of tapas to share. Novocastrians with more refined tastes can enjoy high tea from bone china on Sundays, or sip from Italian crystal glassware in the central dining hall.

Completely overrated
Without doubt the most appalling service ever! They really need to find some new staff or train them properly! And I've heard this from a few people in Newcastle who all say the same thing. Really nice food but overpriced. Too many Newcastle restaurants seem to be charging Sydney prices when they don't offer the same quality of food or pay the same rents. So definitely not value for money ... which is a shame as tghis place has so much potential .. it is a lovely space with a great feel.
