Stepping into the rather large shoes left by the iconic Gouger Fish Cafe, which occupied this prime piece of Gouger Street real estate for so many years, Ba Guo Bu Yi is luckily up to the challenge, offering a distinct change from both the bog-standard seafood and ubiquitous Chinese eateries peppering this legendary eating strip. Instead, it goes for a bold, uncompromising Szechuan menu and an Oriental red and black style and tanks full of live barramundi, lobster and white spider crabs at the rear of the restaurant.
Although there are plenty of mild options on the menu, the good stuff and the house specialties are invariably eye-wateringly spicy, like the spicy boiled fish which is, by all reports, far better than it sounds and a must-try. Portions are ridiculously generous, so be careful when ordering but don't be shy: the burn will only last a minute and the experience of eating truly authentic, spicy Szechuan cuisine like this will last a lifetime.
