Azafran

Azafran is the Spanish word for saffron. This exotic red spice is something of an obsession for owner-chef Marc Bocquee and at least one dish on the menu will contain it on any given day. Azafran's dining room, with its deep red walls and a small, airy veranda, has subtle lighting effects which create pools of intimate space. The food is a delicate mix of flavours reflecting French, Italian and Middle Eastern influence combined with Modern Australian flair.

Date Night
Ok..First time we have been. The restaurant is small inside..Some would say charming and I would agree except that there are a couple to many tables for the area. My wife and I were bascially sitting on top of the couple next to us. The food is great although I still get annoyed about the fact that you have to pay extra for sides. In saying that there is plenty there. The wine list is extensive but double what you can normally pay for wine so I recommend you take your own. The corkage is 7.50 which still works out cheaper.

Friendly, high standards of cooking
Went back to Azafran recently after many years since our last visit - pleasing to see they have maintained their friendly service and very high standard of cooking. The food is a little more expensive nowadays, but well worth it. Dishes are interesting, and all our mains were perfectly cooked, seasoning well judged, and sauces delicious. I could eat their Blue Eye Cod or Duck everyday - they are both delicious. Sides were great - their fries with aioli may be the best I have ever had. Deserts do not disappoint. I can see where some comments are coming from regarding wait times, but you should look past that - it is a charming and friendly small venue, and the cooking we have experienced here has always been at a high level.

Love it!!
I have dinned at Azafran about 6 times in the last four years, as a chef I dont get to eat out very much!!. Every time I eat there I walk out with a smile on my face, appreciating and understanding all the hard work that must go on to prepare this type of food. As a chef and an Azafran customer it is hard to read and believe that the guys at Azafran would send out food that they are not proud of, I just read blader_304, may 08.I just feel the need to say that it is exceptionally hard cooking meats to everyones personal expectations, as where you dine dictates your expectation, Azafran has always cooked my and my guests meats perfectly. If you are used to dining at large pub/steak houses you probably expect your meat more cooked than a classicaly chef will do, I have also come across this issue at my place of work.
I have written this more so to say one persons review may not be an accurate reflection of the overall restaurant and that I will definately return to see what can tempt me on the menu.
Although I dont know the owners personally, I definately recognise the passion and hard work that they must put in to keep there doors open and foodies feed. Good work Azafran, you will see us again, soon!

Suburb Spectacular
My partner & I have driven past this little restaurant (with its hidden aladdins caves and gorgeous red walls) numerous times and decided after weeks of wondering, that YES lets go out to Azafran....

WOW! We were impressed. The food was spectacular. It was well presented and the flavours were beautiful. The wait staff could have been more professional - very attentive but lacked a bit of polish.

We highly recommend the market fish of the day and their oysters. They have a great wine selection to match their food as well.

The turkish pancotta with pistachio icecream and saffrom fairy floss is as they all say - A moutful of heaven... we could of easily had two serves!!

Overall we were left very satisfied, not full and certainly extremely happy that we decided to eat at this cute suburban yet sophisticated restaurant. We can honestly say it was a brilliant dining experience, one of the best we have had in a long time. They have their mojo sorted....

Consistently great!
I have been to Azafran quite a few times now and am pleased to say that the food is always outstanding. The meals are a good size and the menu is so interesting and creative that I always have a hard time choosing! The desserts here are really a highlight - I recommend the pannacotta and the chocolate souffle!

On my most recent visit it was really busy but the staff look like they really enjoy it as they are friendly and welcoming.

We mostly tend to BYO but the wine list is reasonably priced so sometimes we splash out as they have wines that you don't see everywhere.

Well done Azafran - we will keep coming back as your venue is unique being a little house and your food is among the best in Brisbane!

Not what I was expecting
As approaching the entrance to this little restaurant in Annerly I was delighted with its welcoming atmosphere and sweetness. Being seated at a candlelit table the menus were presented and our glasses filled with water without needing to ask. The wait staff were friendly, unfortunately they were very slow and the food was very mediocre. The waitress took too long to return for our order and we did not get our mains until after an hour from ordering! The bread and oil entree was nothing more than some toasted pieces of multigrain bread which could be easily made by any old Joe. The lamb entree was riddled with bones which was terrible considering it cost almost $19! Once we finally receieved our meals (after asking where they were) I found my steak to be medium rare, even rare in some areas when I had ordered a medium steak. On my partner's plate was a pitiful amount of food that had next to no flavour. After mentioning that our meals were 'just ok' the waitress came back offering a glass of wine or a dessert on the house. Unfortunately we were too annoyed that we did not wish to stick around any longer and due to our mains taking so long to come out, goodness knows how much longer we would need to wait for dessert. Suprisingly at the front counter no discount was offered on our bill even though they were prepared to shout free dessert.
