Awganix

While everyone thought those poor coeliacs, vegetarians and organic obsessives were stuck in weird hippie cafes, eating faux-meat and lentils, they (or at least the savvy ones) have actually been enjoying a gluttonous feast of gourmet cuisine at Awganix in McLaren Vale. This conscientious brasserie has moved to the Marienberg Centre, occupying an appropriately wholesome-looking, sunlit, blond timber space. In this bright and open room, clued-up foodies dine on a menu of organic, local produce-focused cuisine, courtesy of chef and co-owner Adam Byford.

The menu ranges from light lunches and nibbles to hearty main courses, such as beef Wellington or a classic stroganoff. Diners can benefit from Awganix's DIY philosophy, tucking into such homemade delicacies as their organic bread or the house-made Aldinga Turkey pate. The menu features a plentiful selection of such nibbly platters, ideal for sharing over a glass of wine from the adjoining Marienberg and Fern Hill winery.

Dinner review
Had 14 friends attend to celebrate a birthday. Preordered a birthday cake made by Awganix (2 other restaurants didn't want to make a cake but if we bought one along they would slice it for us at $1.10 a slice!!!). The food was excellent but was bettered only by the service. Couldn't recommend it highly enough and we all thought the pricing was very reasonable. With individual pricing for each person that just made life that little bit easier! We shall return.

Gluten Free disaster
When I made my booking I informed them that I needed gluten free. When I arrived they assured me that they were aware and provided me with a separate gluten free menu. I then ordered from this menu. I was half way through my meal before it was discovered that it was not gluten free because the waitress failed to inform the kitchen when my order was taken. As a coeliac this was a health disaster and the restaurant did not adequately compensate for this blunder of which I became very sick in the following days. The restaurant's ambience was excellent and my husband (who is a non-coeliac) said his food was good. If you require gluten free then triple check when ordering and when the food is brought to your table.
