Batifoler means 'to romp or to lark about; to flirt'- appropriate descriptors of this cheerful suburban bistro. Quality, well-priced Gallic classics are prepared and served by an all-French staff, encouraging diners to pull out their dodgy high school French in order to completely capture the French experience. The dishes have a predominantly hearty provincial flavour, with occasional Mediterranean notes from France's southern neighbours.

Top quality establishment
My partner and I ate dinner at Aux Batifolles on a Wednesday evening after cancelling our reservations at Madame Sousou's. We stumbled across this place while searching for directions to Sousou's and their menu was more extensive so we decided to make the switch. This turned out to be an excellent decision.
The food was spectacular, rich and authentic. The service was friendly yet formal and their attention was neither overbearing or impossible to get despite the restaurant filling up over the evening.
Can't recommend this place highly enough, we will be going back for top quality french cooking at a reasonable price.

Very satisfying French bistro dining
I visited this restaurant again last week after enjoying its ambience and food for the first time last month. I had been very pleasantly surprised, the food was great and service excellent. This time around the waiters' were a little slow to warm up and couldn't really get their act together. However, the evening progressed and we received our fabulous chicken pies with crayfish and gruyere, washed down with a NZ sauvignon blanc recommended by the waiter. Although it was disappointing to later learn that creme caramel was not available that day, and one of the wines we requested from the list was not available, I was able to practise my basic french and understand what the waiter was saying. On both occasions its been a Thursday night. Overall, I will visit aux batifolles again; it has charm, the food is great and unlike other french restaurants, it's easy and far from pretentious.

Excellent innovative French food
This restaurant is a little jewel in the northern part of the city. The chef is French, the staff are French and the food is authentic modern French fare. The service is friendly and informative; the staff are obviously passionate about the food and give good advice as to what may suit your tastes. For the quality the pricing is very reasonable. A memorable experience shared with good friends. My son-in-law is French so we are soon returning to the restaurant with him and our daughter who has lived in France to get their opinion.

Maybe better on a weeknight?
This was my second time to this restaurant. Looks like there was a bit of a makeover - the divisions make the place look and feel better. I booked for 7.30 on a Saturday night but they said they would prefer 8.00 - thinking that they must stagger their service so they can cope better. Anyway, arrived at 8.00 along with a few other groups. I was very hungry so wanted to get my order in before the larger groups. Asked the waitress to take our order but she said she would tell the waiter (apparently this wasn't her role). I watched her and she never told the main waiter we were ready to give our order. So the main waiter didn't get to us until 8.30 after taking everyone elses order. Was extremely hungry at this stage and not very happy so asked it the kitchen was so busy that it would take ages for our meals to come out. He said no, shouldn't take long. An hour later, we were served our dinner. The waitress brought out wrong meals to different tables. She was absolutely hopeless. She took our order for desserts but then asked the main waiter to take our order because presumably she didn't understand. I watched her stuff up orders for other tables. Anyway, food was pretty good... very homely. Yes it was Saturday night and it was a full house, but that's never any excuse for poor service. Perhaps they were understaffed that night and the waitress was a fill in... I would like to think so and would give this place the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure on a less busy night there would be no issues with service.
