Aubergine

Aubergine serves modern European food in a refined though welcoming atmosphere. The interior design of the restaurant is simple but sophisticated with high ceilings, cedar window frames and white suede highlights. Owner and chef Ben Willis has made his mark on the menu, with offerings such as the leek, gruyere and dauphinoise pithivier, endive salad and sweet mustard dressinger puree, fresh dates and amontillado sherry jus. Equal care has been taken with the dessert menu; try the blood orange creme caramel with citrus salad.

Our favourite fine dining restaurant in Canberra so far!
We enjoyed an evening at Aubergine a little while back, and thought that it was definitely worth mentioning that they were fantastic. We have had difficulty finding a restaurant in Canberra that is any good - but this one definitely rates! Sure you have to pay for it, but for a special night out, it is more than worth it.

Not the best, but not the worst
Decided to try Aubergine as one of the few restaurants we haven't been to in Canberra. Nice interior, 4 at a table would make for little leg room as the tables are relatively small. Food was uninspiring. Best was the beetroot salad, worst was the John Dory which was smothered in butter. Also not worth ordering again would be the lamb, overdone with eggplant.

Price is also bad for what you get. There is much better options in Canberra for the price you pay.

Great food, nice restaurant, but who's paying the bill?
We went to dinner with some client's after hearing so many good things about Aubergine. The food didn't dissapoint, it was fantastic...couldn't fault the food in the slightest. And the restaurant itself is beautiful. But when the bill came I nearly fell off my chair. It's beyond expensive to say the least.

The Suburban Revival
I would have to agree with Enny about her comments in May. This was logically at the time Ben Willis would have been in negotiation to purchase the premises. Upon our return mid 2007 even with James Mulison at the helm that night you got the feeling that the running of three premises around town was taking its toll. (I would contest that a large function would certainly compromise the quality in most cases however)
Under a new Chef and Owner a much needed re-vitalization has come for all lucky enough to dine at Aubergine today. You would say Ben's Mark has been to increase portion size, whilst keeping the meals flavoursome and best of all the price represents good value for money. If I read the menu correctly you can request a set price three course menu and get dinner and a good bottle for $150 total for two.
The Goats Cheese Beetroot Salad and the Kingfish Sashimi stlye were very nice. (The fish only bettered by our Pier dining experience) The leek, gruyere and dauphinoise pithivier was imensely flavoursome and The Atlantic Salmon on a Mussel and Spring Vegetable Broth was beautifully balanced. The dessert was certainly equal to the preceeding courses, but enough carrying on.
Aubergine is still one of Canberra's Best Restaurants and deserves to get back into the SMH Good Food Guide. I do not know why it was ommitted for 2009. I can only say that Ben Willis bought well and will certainly improve on Aubergine's already fine reputation.

Not up to scratch
I went here for a function recently, and from all the hype (and the price!) I expected so much more. The food was uninspiring and the service was lacklustre at best. Nice decor and location.

Fantastic
The food is fantastic and great service. It has good atmosphere and is one of canberra's best restaurants.
Be prepared to pay for what you get as it usually costs around $150 for two people for two courses and dessert to share. Definitely the place to go if you want to treat yourself or take your date.

Suburban Bliss
As part of the trio of restaurants run by James this would easily be the most welcoming and intimate.
Unfortunately the cool Canberra climate ensures that the balcony/terrace can only be used for half the year, but what it lacks in the winter months is made up for by its warmth and modern style inside.
Food is Excellent, Wine Selection is Good and well balanced. Service for Canberra is High. But let's face it there is an extremely limited supply of educated quality waiting staff when compared to some of our larger siblings.
