Sick of burgers with microwaved frozen meat patties? The Arab Steed produces the classic version with a big, handmade beef version, flavoured with herbs and grilled to perfection. This retreat for the city dweller in need of comfort food has all the classics, from parmigiana, fish and chips and bangers and mash to a pasta of the day. The Arab Steed was opened in 1901 to remind the local labourers where they could quench their thirst. This reputation is unblemished. The Arab has a range of Coopers on tap and more than 20 additional bottled beers in old-style wooden chiller cabinets.
The service is minimal, but friendly, as to be expected in a local tavern. Order drinks and meals at the bar and count the extra change in your pocket for doing so. The furnishings are comfortable and colourful, just enough to keep the pokie regulars interested and the visitors amused. The service may not be complete, but all the staff have a smile at the ready and are quick to clear the table. For a paltry thirst, or enough to drown an Arab's steed, this is the ideal stop for a cold beer and a big meal.

Honest pub fare with a bit more
A favourite for long lunches with clients or just friends. The quality is consistent and there is a nice touch of flair added to what might reasonably be considered usual counter meal fare. The pale ale battered fish and chips are always crisp and crunchy. This is a fairly standard pub meal dish and as such, I often try it around town to gauge overall quality of a pub meal. The Arab never fails. The service is attentive and orders are always correct and all accounted for. The outside tables could be bigger if they wish to seat 4 guests around them, but there you go. Prices are very reasonable and there are always interesting blackboard daily specials and vegetarian offers.
