Since opening as a beatnik coffee joint in 1956, the Arab has been a Lorne institution, attracting a steady stream of bohemians, hippies, poets and artists over the last 50 or so years. The gradual gentrification of the area, as well as of the Arab, has meant that these days you're as likely to find young families, yuppies, backpackers and retirees as the wild crowds of years gone by, but the eclectic vibe of the place still stands, and the warmth and all-welcoming attraction is impossible to resist. The food is international, with dishes like chicken kiev and chicken schnitzel particular house specialties, while for dessert the apple crumble is a crowd favourite. Enjoy it from a sunny spot in the blue-dominated surrounds of the Arab, just across the road from the beach, and you'll feel relaxed and bohemian all at once.
