This corner cafe has generated a buzz that's spread like wildfire among the espresso-obsessed and eggs-addicted of Melbourne. Nestled in the inner-eastern suburb of Alphington, this bright and spacious cafe once stood as a milk bar (you wouldn't know it now), and these days packs in plenty of people around its myriad communal tables, front street-facing stools, and smaller tables in the umbrella-cloaked garden courtyard.
It's no wonder APTE has garnered such a following once you consider its key assets, which include single origin Five Senses coffees (most notably, the house blend), the generous breakfasts (think ricotta hotcakes, baked Spanish eggs and the like), the lunchtime pides, sandwiches and pastas and the house-made cakes and cookies. As if you hadn't had enough to heartily consume, APTE's walls exhibit eye candy in the form of ever-changing artworks.

One of my favourites!
Really gorgeous food at breakfast and lunch. Great coffee and good service. Scrambled eggs with fetta. Yum!

Let's face it, there isn't much in the Alphington area and the suburb has been screaming out for a great cafe. APTE has come to the rescue. The coffee is consistently excellent and prepared with care. The muffins are the best in Melbourne, no doubt. The food is fresh and lovely. If you're there at breakfast and want a change from the eggs and bacon ritual, you cannot go past the ricotta hotcakes, served with poached fruit in season and an orange-scented ricotta cream.
