Apple Bar

Former Sydney chef and liquor entrepreneur Michael Jaggard deserted the bright lights in favour of a semi-rural tree-change in Bilpin. However, the move away from the big smoke has not resulted in retirement, or arguably even a change in pace, with Jaggard opening up a humming pizza restaurant and bar. Apple Bar combines two of the products for which Jaggard is best known: mouth-watering woodfired pizzas (he formerly owned The Edge pizzeria in Darlinghurst) and his line of liqueurs made from native Australian ingredients.
Inside the converted country cottage, those in the know perch on benches and stools, sipping on glasses of wine and perusing the menu options and the daily specials. The interior is a city-dweller's fantasy of a rural retreat, its slick styling completed by rustic touches such as a fireplace, corrugated iron bar front and a verandah. The menu is packed full of local produce, personally sourced from the markets by Jaggard, including plenty of wood-roasted meats to add variety to the pizza-dominated menu. As well as being a foodie destination, Apple Bar is a prime spot for a slightly boozy afternoon with friends. Bring your sober driver, as the intriguing aniseed myrtle, lemon myrtle and quandong liqueurs beg to be sampled.

Worst restaurant experience
Ordered four main and one entree (requested to be served with the mains).

10 minutes later the waiter came back and told us there was a 40 minutes wait, we decided to order another entree to keep the kids happy, some fried potato. Asked to get the spicy sauce replaced by tomato sauce to suit the kids.

The potatoes (entree) were served with the spicy sauce, the next entree was served well before the other mains, three mains were served after more than one hour wait, and the fourth main was served 20 minutes later. At this stage I asked them to take the plate out and not charge for it. They insisted to serve it to me and asked if I wanted a doggy bag, claiming you have to understand it is Mother's Day. At last I did not have to pay for the fourth main (we had already split the food we got).

Miss at all costs!
Sigh, yet another Sydney chef moves to the countryside to open a restaurant. We have been there twice now and will NEVER go back given the lack of service. It's a shame given the food is pretty decent, but being handed a HOT plate, burning my fingers and then he looking at me like I was insane as I dropped it onto the table is more than enough. Ordering items that never show up, then you get billed for them is the final straw.

The Apple Bar - Bilpin
Great casual atmosphere, a lovely place to meet a group of friends and sit under the stars for dinner. Specials board started with many interesting choices, although the entertainment for the evening was watching item after item being crossed off the menu by the friendly wait staff as the kitchen ran out!
When it arrived the food was lovely though be prepared to wait - don't be in a hurry!
