Anouk

After the success of her former venture, The Gun Shop Cafe, Justine Whelan is stirring up the streets of Paddington, providing an unpretentious venue with a fresh and inventive menu. A former chemist shop, this place still has a touch of medicinal value; it's a great place to unwind with a soothing cup of tea while the doctor (aka chef James Hildyard) fixes you a hearty, healthy meal. Breakfast or lunch, the dishes are as dazzling as the bright red walls. Try the Atlantic salmon with herbed ricotta dumplings and pappardelle; or embrace the chef's creativity with the tea-smoked chicken with kipfler potatoes, asparagus and vanilla cream.

Friendly service, perfect coffee & delicious food
This cafe has quickly become one of my favourite places to eat in Brisbane - it's not pretentious; it just has fantastic coffee, delicious, interesting food & excellent, friendly service. The waiters were attentive and even though it was a busy Saturday morning on my most recent visit, we were seated as quickly as possible and with a smile. I had a brilliant breakfast of goats cheese, asparagus and poached eggs with hollandaise & my friend had eggs with chorizo that was amazing too. There are so many average and over-priced places in Brisbane that it's a relief to find somewhere realiably wonderful like Anouk! Highly recommended!

Not the Best
Our lunch, chicken pieces & haloumi salad were over cooked. Other than that quite tasty. We were never asked if we wanted drinks. Our coffees were in nice large cups, a rarity these days, but not spectacular coffee. The tiramisu desert was quite nice but can make better at home. First & last time at this place.

Over Rated
I have been to Anouk twice after reading and hearing fantastic reviews. The reason for my second visit was to prove myself right that Anouk is completely over rated. The wait is excruciatingly long for food that is cold. On both occasions the food had no heat and the wait was over half an hour. The staff do not make it easy to get a second coffee (or any service for that matter) during this time. As a local I will not be recommending Anouk to friends or visitors.

The Best
Without a doubt Anouk is an absolute triumph !

I would consider myself a discerning diner and I would have to say Anouk delivers again and again. I was prompted to write this review when European clients I took for breakfast yesterday, could not stop raving about their breakfast.

They were astounded at not only the food the coffee and the service but also the fact that people were lining up to dine for breakfast !

Its funny but all too often it takes someone else to note how amazing a restaurant is before we stop and consider how wonderful what we take for granted, really is !

Well done Anouk and staff - you are doing a wonderful job - Its been a while since I have had lunch but I cant wait !

Raw to Rubber
My orange pancakes presented well and looked thick and fluffy. Upon first bite it was revealed that the middle was still runny, raw mixture. They were promptly returned to the kitchen via responsive wait staff. I was told my meal would be returned in a few minutes. About 10 minutes later after my dining companions had finished their meals I was presented with a stack of thin pancakes half the size of the raw stack which ultimately had the texture of rubber.
Why kitchen staff could not cook the thick pancakes all the way through is beyond me. I complained to wait staff who said, "they are usually really good", unfortunately this did not help me given the only thing I had for breakfast was a few bites of raw pancake followed by a few bites of rubber pancake. I suppose I can be thankful for the ridiculously overpriced hot choc I drank before my meal arrived. This was my first visit and also my last!

Regulars not going back
We have breakfast at Anouk every weekend without fail but won't be doing this after our experience last week. We took some excited friends from Sydney who were visiting to breakfast at Anouk. We were told that we would have to wait to be seated as a table of six, which we were happy to do. In that time we waited patiently we saw a table of six go and another be seated. Just as another table of six was leaving we were told by a rude waiter that we would have to sit as separate tables of four and two side by side? as they would not sit us as a table of six and just couldn't do it ever, despite being asked to wait as we had done and seen others do. It's a sad state of affairs if a cafe can't seat more than four people at a time even if guests are prepared to wait. This cafe usually sees breakfast both days from us a weekend, but not anymore. Very bad service and poor treatment of regular paying customers - we will never be back. Disappointed.

No babies
I went to Anouk today with my sister and a friend and her young son (nearly one). After placing our order bub bumped his head on the table and began to cry, we were then asked if we wished to sit at an outside table which we declined as it was very sunny and the tables are close to a very busy road. Within minutes we were told that we must sit outside or leave. We left feeling very angry and a bit shocked. I have been to Anouk numerous times however following this shocking experience I will never go back!

Great food, ordinary coffee
When will Brisbane demand a decent barista! Why is it so hard to get a decent coffee here? Anouk has awesome food- particularly their breakfasts (dspite the lengthy wait it is worth it), but the coffee is positively ordinary- watery version of International roast would be the best description.
