An intimate and relatively new restaurant on Sydney's north shore, Annapoorna offers traditional Indian dishes with a good dose of spice - although there are mild dishes for the less adventurous. The hot beef jalfrezi (diced beef tossed with green and red capsicum, onion, tomato and pepper sauce, with roasted, crushed cumin and pepper) and the chicken biryani (a medium-spicy dish of chicken and rice with biryani masalas, cloves, peppercorns and fresh herbs) are always dependable, and the goat pepper masala (on the bone, with brown onion and tomato gravy, sauteed with green chillies, curry leaves, garam masala, ginger, garlic and pepper) is a standout.
