Anise

This tiny restaurant more than makes up for its petite stature with traditional French cuisine - with a tempting modern twist - and one of the best wine lists in town. Sit up on the high leather chairs at the bar and let the knowledgeable staff guide you through the extensive (and ever-changing) selection. For starters try the buckwheat blini with salmon prepared two ways, followed by a saffron and seafood pilaf filled with mussels and yabbies. The small space creates an intimate atmosphere for dinner with friends.

Sadly disappointing
I had been looking forward to going to Anise for years... literally! Being a New Farm local it was at the top of my 'must try' list. We ordered the 5 course dego with matching wines... but found ourselves constantly having to ask for more wine... and then not have it explained to us in any way. We also went through the evening trying to remember what we were eating from the menu for each course as our dishes were simply placed in front of us with no explanation again. The food was still amazing... especially the truffle gnocchi. Honestly though - think I'll have to give it another shot - too many friends think it's amazing.

One out of two
The title is misleading as I quite liked Anise and the person I went with wasn't all that impressed! We had the degustation menu and actually got quite plastered by the end by not matching the wines and going rogue on it! I quite enjoyed sitting at the bar and chatting to the people next to us.

The highlight of the meal was the souffle, the roulade and the fillet mignon. The concept for a couple of the courses were less impressive like the vinegar-drenched scallops.
