Shame..
Having eaten and enjoyed the food at the charming vego place above Republica, we decided that it was time to give this place a shot. Reservation booked for 8pm, 6 people turn up... Anyone here to show us to the table? Nope! Just some poor sod playing aging hits on a guitar and mic (which were way too loud, but we'll come back to that in due course).
After finding a spare table for 6 people, the waitress politely provided chilled water and took drinks orders. Menu was a little pricey, but we thought what the hey, the food read very well.
I ordered the rib eye with hand cut chips, broccoli and b?arnaise sauce for $36, my dinner companions ordered things from the tortellini ($25) to the dips ($15) to the fish and chips.
Drinks took overly long to arrive, and whilst we attempted some table conversation, I quickly became rather annoyed at the need to scream at a person sitting 2 feet from me in order to be heard over the musician.
Food arrived after 30-40mins (by which stage the alcohol had kicked in and the music had gotten louder). My steak presented very well, looked nice and smelt amazing. That s where the good points stopped. Steak, chips, broccoli and bearnaise were cold, steak was overcooked and the portions were woefully inadequate for the price of the meal. I asked the waitress (charming girl really) to take it back to the kitchen and see if they could fix the heat problem. The steak came back about 5 mins later still cold. Needless to say I wasn't impressed.
On to the tortellini... for $25 I'd expect something rather impressive. 4 pieces of Tortellini on a plate the size of a dust bin lid with some pumpkin mash and a spattering of sauce later and my dinner companions were wondering where the main course was at.
Dips? Well the bread was like rocks and the dips looked dried out and store bought. C'mon guys this isn't rocket science.
$250+ for dinner for 5 people, not including drinks. I can cook more appealing meals at home for 1/2 the price.
Excellent spot, great looking food and the service staff are friendly... unfortunately until their kitchen pulls their heads out of the clouds and offers food worthy of the price tag and wait times (and obscenely loud musician) I wouldn t recommend Republica as a venue to visit.
