The Alphabet City Cafe looks irresistibly cute and carelessly cosy. With its colourful walls and mismatched furniture, boxes of toys and artworks for sale, this cafe has its arms outstretched, ready to embrace any person walking the cool end of High Street. And with its philosophy of giving the punters what they pay for, the food is as down to earth as the decor. From curries to carrot cake, a variety of homely, scrumptious meals are on offer. Try their famous laksa, or go for the popular rice balls with salad.

Good food but a shame about the poor service
I have eaten lunch and dinner here and have to admit that this place can be very hit and miss. Generally the food is good especially their laksa which is delish. However it is the lazy and at times incompetent service which lets this place down. It all depends on who serves you cause if you get the wrong one, you will be waiting a while for everything. At this meal, it took about 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive and the water I politely asked for never arrived. I had to get it myself. Another problem is that not all of the items on the menu are available. For example, I have been there 3 times with one friend and each time he asks for a Red Stripe, they never have it. If you don't have it, then don't advertise it I say. On a more positive note, again the food is good and the serves are generally large. Plus the hedgehog for dessert is a bit of a winner.

Laidback Place, Open All the Time
...well it seems to be all the time. A favourite with the locals, I've had breakfast, lunch, dinner and brunches here. I've even stopped by for a quick takeaway coffee and foccacia. Friendly owner (also a local) and some great friendly staff.
Alphabet City Cafe also has a lovely outdoor eating area and a small dining room tucked out the back. Alternatively, put yourself on show and sit at the window. (It's raised like a pedestal bench).
Huge menu, good variety of food - check out the weekend breakfast special!
