Alio does innovative takes on Italian, and is tucked away in a classy yet simple space that protects it from the nearby Cleveland Street bustle. Run by the young but accomplished brother-sister team of Ashley and Tracey Hughes, the restaurant is a reflection of their time working at London's River Cafe, as well as Ashley's travels through Italy. The pasta is hand-rolled on the premises, and is consistently divine. The adjoining cocktail bar is great for pre- and post-dinner drinks.

A Surry Hills Surprise
Just stumbled across this hidden gem in Surry Hills / Redfern. Italian food at its best. Young and vibrant staff and a menu that can't be faulted. We had the degustation and it exceeded expectations on every dish. And to top it all off, great value for money.

If only the service was mediocre
Took my parents and brother here for a special dinner. Had previously had an amazing dinner here. As the restaurant is BYO, I had brought some vintage Champagne from the cellar. Took the wait staff 25 minutes to ask us for a drink after we we seated. Then 10 minutes for our Champagne to return opened. My meal came 10 minutes after everyone else's. Wait staff had to be flagged down to receive any attention. Dessert order taken incorrectly. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.

Sack the waitstaff
While the food was absolutely exquisite (we had the degustation), the service was atrocious. There were three waiters, all of them snooty, with no personality and no care or pride in their work. They didn't even ask if we had special dietary requirements, which was interesting, since I am vegetarian. Our water glasses were unfilled, we weren't offered coffee, the food wasn't explained properly, we weren't once asked if we enjoyed any part of the evening. Shame because the chef obviously loves his craft and prepared the dishes with utmost care. I am not the first person to complain about the waitstaff - come on Alio, lift your game.
