Akita Japanese restaurant has been serving traditional yet innovative Japanese cuisine in its simple, informal setting for many years and has built up a solid reputation and a fiercely loyal clientele. Specials are updated twice daily and often feature delightful seafood dishes such as crisp-skinned trout or wok-tossed squid. A consistent winner of an Age Good Food Guide Chef's Hat, the key to Akita's success lies in letting the quality, seasonal ingredients do all the talking. The best way to eat at Akita is to select a range of dishes from the specials menu and share amongst friends. The kimono-clad staff will only be too happy to explain the menu.

AMAZING EXPERIENCE
This was one of the primary eating experiences of the last 5 years of my life. Each course was a complete sector in our eating adventure for the evening. To begin with we found the restaurant by searching Google and arrived at this website. We booked a table for 2 which was ready when we arrived, we were ushered through immediately. We started with Entree Sashimi, which melted in the mouth and was delicious even to a non-seafood partaking guest. Following this we had Entree Tempura, which held a wide variety of vegetables and two prawns, none of which went soggy, as happens often elsewhere with this dish. Japanese pickled vegetables were a great side dish, with Fish Broth and Miso soup concurrently. Beef Tataki was an incredible cut of meat, cooked to perfection and made extra special by the lemon on the plate. The only thing missing was the usual egg yolk on top, which may have been because of the Westernisation of the dish to appeal to more "average" clientele. Gyoza finished off the savoury portion of the meal and was delicate, clean and lacking the "common" flavour of many of the restaurant's peers. We completed our meal with two serves of ice cream - his was Red Bean flavour, hers was Black Sesame - two types of ice cream outside the realm of the more widely spread Green Tea flavour.
The Wine list was of very reasonable quality and by-the-glass selections excellent (Giesen Estate SB is a beautiful accompaniment to Japanese food). Beers were basic Australian made - only two Japanese beers - we would love to see more!!! We would also love to see more types of Sake available as it appeared there was only one type, label missing.
The only things that detracted from the atmosphere (nice blackened wood tables, low lighting) was the absence of a Tatami room (which would be wonderful in this environment with this food) and the table of 6 other guests seated across the walkway from us, who were loud and trashy.
Overall an amazing experience in culinary pleasure!!!
Totally.
Go there.

Japanese perfection!
Restaurant is a bit dated, but part of the experience of dining at Akita. We enjoyed wonderfully fresh sushi and the sashimi was amongst the best we have eaten. We left the rest of the selections to the owner, Toshi, and asked him to choose 4-5 entree specials for us and we were delighted with his choices! Great way to sample Akita's wonderful food! Highly recommended! They have now won us as regulars!
