With Indian restaurants a dime a dozen, it can be hard for chefs of this familiar cuisine to stand out from the crowd. But with a couple of smart decisions, the proprietors of New Farm's Agra on James have done just that. The first regards the menu. Though you will find all the dishes you would expect from an Indian restaurant here (the extensive menu contains upwards of 30 mains), you'll also encounter lesser-known offerings from the subcontinent, as well as ingredients not typically made use of. Vegetarian wontons are filled with lentils lightly flavoured with aniseed; wagyu beef is marinated with whole spices; and baby potatoes are stuffed with dried fruits and cooked in a creamy sauce.
The other pleasant surprise here is the presence of a cocktail menu. Where else could you accompany your Indian meal with a drink called the Farisha - a delicate pairing of amaretto and baileys - or the Kavita - a gin based cocktail with a chilli kick.
