The food found in this Manuka cafe is very far reaching, regionally speaking. The menu ventures from Indonesian to Malaysian cuisines, via Singaporean and Nonya food. Between the walls of this brightly toned eatery there is an emphasis on quick, authentic eats that do not sacrifice quality and will not put an offensive dent in the weekly entertainment budget.
Abell's Kopi Tiam (meaning coffee shop in Malay) is constantly abuzz and often full to capacity, having earned itself a loyal following of locals, pollies and journos in recent years. The friendly, happy and efficient staff are welcoming, even during their busiest times. Most importantly, they know their product.
Visitors can mull over the selection of innovative dishes on offer, but by all accounts it is the traditional dishes that earn the establishment their review points. Undoubtedly the great find in Abell's fusion of cuisines is the Nonya element, as providers of this food are still relatively thin on the ground in the nation's capital.

You can rely on consistent quality
My wife and I come here most Friday evenings and it is our favourite time of the week. We always enjoy very good food and friendly service. The kari ayam is hard to go past. Be sure to try the tempura veges and the duck rice paper rolls too! Abell really knows how to look after his many regular patrons.

Good food, but lacks courteous service
On our visit to Canberra, we had lunch here on Friday 22 January 2010. Arrived at about 1:30 p.m. after viewing the Masterpieces from Paris exhibition at the National Gallery.
The place was like a no-frills family-run cafe (more like a Chinese coffee shop). Smallish space, brown wooden tables - no tablecloth. Uninspiring decor. Not very inviting. Staff seemed aloof and lacked grace and friendliness.
Abell's Char Kueh Teow was okay - not too greasy and tasted fine. It seemed like an in-house variation. Kari Ayam Pedas (spicy-hot chicken curry) was delicious - went well with rice. Malayan Beef Rendang was acceptable - less spicy than the real stuff. Lemon-lime bitters drink was well prepared.
The staff seemed more keen on closing up at 2:30 p.m. and hurrying us out. Without our asking for it, our bill was promptly delivered to our table at 2:25 p.m. There were 3 other tables besides ours that were occupied even before we arrived. We paid and left before the others.

great food for a reasonable price
Went there several times, meals are cooked fresh and don't contain any MSG either. Staff are friendly, but the best thing I find is their passionfruit tart :-) yummy. Gets rather busy, so make sure you book.

absolutely brilliant Malaysian Food with some fusion
Most underated Malaysian restaurant. Better than the best in Sydney or Melbourne. Worth a drive from Sydney for the best.

Cute place with great food
I recently had dinner at Abel's and would definitely go back. It's a small, casual restaurant with great food and service. The menu is a little odd with a section containing the "usual fare" (lemon chicken, Mongolian beef etc), but we ordered from the Malaysian dishes which were more to our liking. The food was tasty and fresh, fantastic for a laidback meal out.
