Vulcan's

  • 33 Govetts Leap Rd
    Blackheath 2785 NSW
  • Chef: Phillip Searle

Many foodies make the pilgrimage to Blackheath for chef Phillip Searle's cooking. Housed in an old bakery with the original baker's oven intact and in use daily, this iconic restaurant is an exercise in simplicity. There's a minimum spend of $45 per person, but that's not very hard to do; when the food is this good, one is encouraged to go all out.

restaurant review
Despite the ratings I read on the review website we decided to book for Friday night dinner as I cannot believe the SMH could get it so wrong. Our experience was very positive, we were running late due to a train miscalculation and the gentleman who seated us was very understanding about our late entrance. Yes the floor is cement and the chairs are hard backed but it is really very comfortable and the food was very good. The waitress was not overly friendly but she is attentive enough and the service is very prompt. We are Sydney people and we do know good service and Vulcans did not disappoint. The only complaint we had was it is difficult to find as it is poorly signposted, no probs if you are a local but not so good if you are not. It is BYO and their charge per person is $5 which we think is exceptional value for money, the poor reviews we read I think were from people who expect to be treated like queens and kings and have no idea about value for money, we would definitely revisit, loved it.

Food 10/10, service and ambience 1/10
We have dined at Vulcans before, and both experiences were similar. The standard of the food is excellent. However the dining experience is let down by a number of factors. The main issue is that it seems to be the objective to get as many people through as possible. Two sittings per night, tables are too close, the bills are all written out and distributed hastily. The restaurant isnt licensed and we were not even offered tea or coffee due to the fact they wanted to give the table to someone else at 8pm. The minimum cover charge isn't necessarily high, but it seems to have been worked out so as to ensure they recover the equivalent of three courses from customers. I would be happier to pay twice as much and dine in better ambience. The food leaves a good taste in your mouth, but the service leaves a lasting bad taste.
