Rosso Espresso

When the berries of the coffee plant are ripe for picking, the Italians refer to them as 'rosso', meaning red - an apt name for this fruitful, iconic espresso bar on St Georges Terrace. For some city suits, Rosso Espresso has become a part of their routine - kick-starting the day with a cup of Rosso's own (100% Arabica) coffee blend, a fresh blood orange juice, a homemade muffin or perhaps a little brekky, then coming back for a second helping at lunch. Many have been wooed by the exclusive mod-Oz creations of chef Graham Arthur - famed for his inspirational work at E cucina, Balthazar and Duende. And given the central location, tourists are also drawn by Rosso's funky retro style, which is why the lime-green bucket chairs out front and the moulded wooden chairs inside are regularly full at peak times. If you're fortunate enough to secure a table, take time to admire the artworks for sale from King Street's Gullotti Gallery. Just like the divine items on the menu, the intriguing wall displays change regularly too.

Not ideal for a vegie meal
It's a sweet little coffee bar and my guess is that this is what they do best.
For our Friday afternoon ladies lunch we were after something a little more lunchy and the description said light lunches. Two of our members being vegetarians, scoured the array of sandwiches next to the counter without avail. Luckily the soup of the day was vegetable and relief - there was ONE option available for them. Food was okay although there were questions about whether it was tinned or not...
Service was reasonable - not sure if they are going for the Parisian "too chic to talk to you" feel. Decor and atmosphere pretty nice. Overall probably a nice place to grab a coffee and chat with a friend or read some kind of "I only read these to be seen doing so" kind of magazine...
