Mahjong

Former rice merchant Max Tsang decided to open his first restaurant after sensing the Melbourne food scene's need for a hip Chinese eatery - and so the ultra-stylish Mahjong was born. The all-glass frontage makes this boldly contemporary restaurant literally the place to see and be seen on Fitzroy Street.

Sip a pre-dinner glass of wine (there are 15 local drops available by the glass) at the spread of raised bar-style tables in the restaurant's front room, which is decorated with oriental ornaments contrasted with playful neon panels. The more opulent back room is dressed with deep red furnishings, the classically elegant atmosphere cultivating the aura of an exclusive dining experience.

Head chef Wah, previously of Crown's Lucky Chan, prepares a range of modern Cantonese cuisine, such as the summery chilli, cucumber and calamari salad (calamari pieces with fresh chilli, thinly sliced cucumber, pink grapefruit wedges, red onion and Asian greens). Equally enticing are the famed coconut scallops, wok-seared in a rich coconut cream sauce. Vegetarians will delight in the vast selection of meat-free dishes such as vegie san choi bao; deep-fried five spice bean curd rolls; and fried rice with fresh tofu and chilli sauce. Lighter snacks are available in the form of yum cha nibbles. Think sugar cane prawns, shark fin dumplings and shredded duck pastries, as well as exotic sweets, such as banana spring rolls or double boiled egg in almond sauce.

A sensational night of over indulgence
I went to Mahjong last night and was truly impressed!! The staff were efficient and courteous as well as helpful in making a decision on what to eat. Finally we told them to surprise us. Dish after dish of delightful food were presented and each was a wonderful mix of flavours that excited the taste buds. We loved the ambiance, service and were blown away with the food. The custard tarts are to die for!! We had a really fantastic night.

My favourite restaurant
This restuarant is amazing,I have been going regularly since it opened. The staff are always extremely nice polite and professional. The food is the best, extremely fresh and tasty, personal favourite is the Salt and Pepper Calamari, I had the shredded chicken and duck salad tonight and its was beautiful. The menu is not your standard menu, giving you the option to try many dishes and all the yummy food! Their sweets are to die for! Go check it out, you will not be disappointed.

Loved the food and atmosphere
We went to Mahjong a while ago and loved it. My fiancee loves Chinese food and mix & match / tapas / banquet style meals. We created our own little feast. The menu has plenty of temptations that you don't see on every Chinese menu and everything we tried was sensational.
The atmosphere is perfect too. We like traditional red Chinese restaurants and hate the bland modern white look. This is a modern but brilliantly retains character.

Overpriced and vegetarian dishes are disgrace
I went to Mahjong tonight and at first sight enjoyed the atmosphere and service. However, it took a while before the main dish arrived and I have to say the vegetarian dish was a disgrace. I paid 24 dollar for a little plate with just some cooked vegetables, really plain vegetables, on and a little bowl of rice for which they charge another $5. I never had such a bad vegetarian meal and certainly not for this price. Really a pity as the atmosphere is great and a perfect service of the staff. I just arrived in this neighbourhood and eat out a lot, but I won't go to Mahjong again.
