7 Spices

Saffron, cinnamon, paprika, cardamom, turmeric, cloves and coriander form the basis of 7 Spices' Indian and Sri Lankan cooking, together with tamarind (which of course is a fruit, not a spice). Technicalities aside, the restaurant offers authentically exotic flavours from all three regions to suit the cautious and the more adventurous diner, from the creamy and mild kormas and tandooris of Northern India, to Sri Lankan seafood curries and hot and spicy Southern Indian classics such as the chettinad curries and dosas. On Friday and Saturday evenings you can gorge on an extensive buffet feast of mixed entrees, butter chicken, rogan josh, rice, bread, desserts and coffees, all for just $32.50 per person for adults and $16.95 for children under 11. 7 Spices hasn't skimped on space either. There is ample room between tables and under the spreading branches of the restaurant's faux-leaved fig tree: you dine in comfortable and elegant surroundings.

Really disappointed.
We have been visiting 7 Spices for about 5 years and decided we would drop in last night to celebrate a special achievement. Unbeknown to us 7 Spices has changed management since our last visit and so things have changed a bit. Many of our favourite and favoured dishes have been removed from the menu and the staff were new. We were greeted quite promptly. Upon ordering we were informed about the new management. We ordered vegetable samosa, prawn korma, pulao rice, paratha and chicken kotthu roti. We were brought some complimentary papadums, which was a nice gesture, had they not been served in a basket that contained the crumbs and grease marks from the last lot of papadums that was served in it. The vegie samosas were nice. We then waited a while for our mains even though we were the only ones in the place. The paratha were dripping with ghee/grease, as was the pulao rice. The korma lacked flavour and was an incipid yellow colour. There was nothing recognisable in the chicken kotthu roti as it was so soaked in ghee. It had no colour variation and left a layer of fat in your mouth that literally left a bad taste in your mouth. Or that could have also been the fact we forked out $65 for our meal and we didn't finish or consume even half of the food we ordered. We were really disappointed to say the least. We have been faithful customers of 7 Spices for many years and we will not returning.

A Little Disappointed
I read the reviews and thought it a good choice to take friends as a treat. The ambience was nice and the smell was wonderful when entering the 2nd level. Friends drinks got a little muddled, but was soon sorted. We went for the smorgesbord so that we could sample a little of everything. A big disappointment when we got back to the table with our meal was that it was only tepid warm. While it tasted nice, I am very sure it would have tasted a lot better had it been hot. To eat almost cold food really lowered our opinion of the restaurant. Shame because I think it is probably a good choice but they really need to look at the heating of their buffet. Maybe a little more authentic music might have added to the atmosphere as well.

On par with Go Go's
Went here for dinner and had the buffet. For buffet food it was very fresh, and did not look unclean.

Service was spot on. Very friendly and happy to answer all our questions. Will be trying the a la carte as soon as we feel like Indian food again.

Lovely location in Applecross.
It is also in the entertainment book.

The one thing that was annoying was, it is not very disable friendly, as we had to head up stairs, not sure it there is a lift if really required though.

biryani superb
We go there every fortnight, just to have biryani- simply because we love it. the taste is great and the best is it tastes always the same whenever u have eat unlike some other places where the same food might taste different every time ordered. I have tried this dish all other places, but this is the best. other food on the menu taste good as well and the service is also good. Its always full with people which itself speaks how good the place is.

Awesome.......
First time I came here...had dinner with my husband...really did not know what to order but then came a very friendly waiter...he explained all their menu and gave a good suggestion. We had butter chicken, Elu Mas curry (lamb), vegetable Kurma with their superb Briyani rice. Would say it was a bit heavy for both of us but the taste made us finish all. The butter chicken was awesome. We would always suggest 7 Spices to our friends. It is the best Indian restaurant to have your meal. It is a combination of Indian and Sri Lankan cooking. Thanking the management and the good service. Will come back very soon.

Fresh Indian
Been here a couple of times now and the food has been good without totally impressing but I think sometimes that's nearly impossible for Indian/Sri Lankan type food. You get what you order in terms of heat and a friend who ordered a hot dish got what he wanted, I broke out into a sweat just looking at it. Enjoyed the spinach and cheese dish and also the entrees esp. the onion bahjis. Service is good and a comfortable atmosphere, wines a little expensive but you can BYO and a good bottle shop is just over the road. Little to distinguish this from other good Indian places but worth a visit if you hanker for a good curry.
