Converted from a split-level terrace house, the 3 Monkeys Cafe sits in the quaint, charming area of Darby Street. Owner Anthony Strachan has created a funky little abode here, offering a modern Australian menu built around tantalising seafood dishes. The chilli lime prawn fettuccini is a worthy contender, but if there's a hungry bunch of you piling in perhaps opt for the 'sea monkey platter'.

glad to see it back
I must say, I am very excited to see the return of the stuffed mushrooms to the Breakfast menu. I've only been to one other restaurant in Newcastle that does stuffed mushrooms so well, but the chefs at the 3 monkeys have excelled themselves in perfecting the flavour combination and meal size.
Having been to the 3 monkeys on several occasions with different people, I can honestly say that it always suits my needs. The upstairs dining area provides a more roomy and less noisy area for my parents, whilst the balcony or outdoor dinning area is perfect for sunny days.
The atmosphere has never been anything other than friendly and hospitable and I've never had a problem with the service, even when I was just getting coffee or a bowl of hot chocolate :)
I would absolutely go to the 3 monkeys again, and have been doing my very best to spread the word about the stuffed mushrooms.
keep up the good work!

'The Pinnacle has been reached
3 Monkeys Cafe has reached the pinnacle of Newcastle's Retail Hospitality Service. Food assortment, quality and the overall appealing nature of all products upon arrival can only be recognised as an image south of the F3, Sydney. In fact, 3 Monkeys has positively overstepped all aspects of positioning the '3 Monkey' image, that it now seems top Sydney Restaurants have a title fight on their hands.
Exceptional customer service, pricing, central location and again, a great assortment of products are all elements that as a consumer, I believe need to become a standard especially when Newcastle is not considered exceptional for fine dining.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all exceptional over the last week, and a $10 Tuesday night steak night has created a 'booking only' circumstance, that the atmosphere is really quite amazing.
I have experienced every restaurant along Darby Street and nothing compares, although Goldberg s have created a more appealing atmosphere. When you do go to 3 Monkeys, the coffee is a must over any period. Breakfast, try the 'Deano' (which it seems the regulars love) or the poached eggs rocket salad, or even try the Asian fried eggs, which my girlfriend loves. Lunch is loaded with different offerings and a must would have to be the pizza. Dinner offers specials and a must would have to be the monkey platter with the house white.
I'm a complete fan, and even Sydney's Icebergs is nothing in comparison. Eat there then thank me later, 3 Monkeys is in a league of its own.

Hot next time
Monkeys cafe I have to say was a little disappointing. We sat upstairs which may explain the wait to be offered the menu. After ordering our coffee which I must say was of a high standard, our meals took 50 mins to arrive. My daughter had ordered Eggs Benedict that was stone cold. We also ordered the Monkey platter which was also cold. May I suggest that a warming system to keep the meals hot is a must.
We would have ordered another round of coffees had we been asked, we also may have been able to have our meals heated but we were forgotten once we had been served our meals.Maybe if we had sat downstairs we may have received some attention. When paying our bill the waitress handled our complaint with a very professional and friendly manner. Her customer service approach is certainly an asset to the THE MONKEYS. We will try again, maybe dinner.
