What a disappointing evening
I'd been here years before and it was okay, so I was really disappointed when we revisited.

To start with, the service was terrible. We'd booked to 12, but a couple of extras turned up, so we asked the waitress if we could get a couple of extra places set up. She responded with "no, you only booked for 12" and then stood there eyes glaring, like she either expected us to send 2 people away, or all leave. We finally convinced another waiter to help out, and were seated. When they took our meals orders and I tried to order a drink, I was curtly told the drinks orders would be taken later. They then took away the menu (which included the wine list) so that when someone finally came back to take drink orders we didn't have a list to refer to. When it came time to serve us, the waiters/waitress hovered near the table and shouted "who ordered a duck curry?" They didn't even know which places the meals were supposed to go to!

The food itself was reasonably expensive ($20 entree, $30 main) and horribly disappointing. My duck salad consisted of dry, unseasoned duck meat beside a pile of bean sprouts, without any kind of dressing. Talk about bland and tasteless. The quail salad was even worse - 3 little quail wings beside a small pile of shaved carrot. The mains were an improvement, but still hardly amazing.

This hotel captures the atmosphere of the bygone era. It attracts a range of people and there were even a few prams. (even the babies were well-behaved) The chap there is courteous and attentive and the food was well cooked, colourful and the steak perfect. The piano was a little loud if you sit too near, but I guess pianos are.The bar area is more like a reception area, but very inviting and relaxing if waiting for friends or a pre-dinner drink.
