1907

This posh Perth eatery has cut no corners when it comes to aesthetics - it is, after all, located in the heart of the city's former fashion centre. Housed in a 100-year-old building which used to operate as a rug factory, 1907 is all about plush red carpets, antique-style dark wood chairs and soft suede booths. This is the sort of place that doesn't list its prices on the menu and encourages diners to pick wine by the bottle.

The cuisine here is quite eclectic, containing such interesting combinations as the Manjimup marron and Port Lincoln mussels steamed in broth of tamarind, lime leaves and coconut cream. 1907 also offers dining rooms and secluded booths for private hire, but they are only accessible to those with very deep pockets.

Dont judge the place by its atmosphere
The food and cocktails were horrible. The drinks taste alot better down stairs. The service is really poor on a busy night but the atmosphere is great.

As the other reviews appear to be a little scathing, I thought I would give my opinion.
I am lucky enough to enjoy many world class restaurants, heralding from the east coast and I was impressed by the the lovely ambience of this restaurant and I think it does hold a definite "WOW" factor with it's chic interior.
I was shown into a private booth to enjoy a romantic dinner for two and treated to fantastic service (although the restaurant was almost empty) and enjoyed three courses a la carte.
The food was up there although the dessert was very very small. The wine list was very good, covering all the bases.
Overall I had a very enjoyable night and should I return to Perth I would definitely like to go again.

Absolute rip-off
I have eaten in some of the finest establishments around the world, and I'm no fool when it comes to "fine dining".

I went to this restaurant on a Friday night with 3 other people, and opted for the A$180.00 seven-course degustacion + wines, as did 2 of my friends.

I am aware of the fact that a degustacion requires a pause between courses, but I was stunned to discover that perhaps the chefs at this establishment didn't know that if you push that "pause" any further than about 10 - 15 minutes, you are, in my opinion seriously upsetting the patron. As it stands, we sat down at 7PM, and for a seven course degustacion, we were not finished (despite multiple complaints) until 11:45PM.

To add insult to injury, the way that the staff appeared to deal with this was to ply us with overpriced mineral water.

The worst part about this was that the long times between courses actually served to highlight how, in my opinion, awful some of them were. The first three were magical, and a masterstroke, the peak was the Mushroom and Truffles served with a Parmesan foam. But it was all downhill from there. This restaurant served, as the main, a poorly cooked leg of lamb, with gravy, half a meat pie and two bits of steamed Brussel Sprouts. I thought at the time it must be a "sense of humour" - since everything else was so finicky and French, the main was decidedly "common", almost as a joke, but the joke was lost based on the fact we had to wait -at least- 50 minutes for the pleasure.

The only saving grace was the dessert, which was exquisite, but also ironically the most filling part of the meal.

Upon our departure, we refused to pay the 75$ or so for WATER, and were left still with a bill of around 650$ Australian, for a horrible horrible night - it ruined my birthday.

1907 Sincerely over rated
I have seen so many rave reviews of how wonderful 1907 is and how discretely eloquent it's design and lay out is expected or "supposed" to be and there is no denying the atmosphere and intent of the owners to achieve a high level of sophistication was not well thought of, but it really just does not live up to the hipe or to one's expectations.

I had recently booked a table of 4 to attend an average Saturday evening meal with cocktails to start in the lounge downstairs folowed by dinner, it was not until later that our group realised the cocktails were to be the best part of the evening.

We sat patiently with excitement of the expecting sublime gastronomic treats that were to be presented in front of us as the menu read so very well. However that was not the case - entrees that arrived late and cooling on the plate, gently roasted lamb cooked to within a sinder, a slice of beef which I just should not go there, oh I believe the fish was OK.

But don't let me influenece you try it out for yourself and hopefully you will have a wonderful evening and not be left dis-heartened as my group was.

A parting note:
Serevice in the cocktail lounge - excellant.
Service in the dining room - ordinary.

All Perth has to offer?
Just visited Perth briefly for a month and was recommended this restaurant as one of Perth's best and current. It's situated in a nice building; maybe that's all you need to make it to the top of Perth's fine dining establishments. Food was fairly dull and dry compared to what has been on offer in Mayfair establishments lately. The prices are reasonable but the waiters are not. Efficient but not great. Not what one would expect at a high class establishment. Wine list is good as what is on offer at the bar. The interior is nothing special though to some on the night it was simply divine. Expected elegant, modern restaurant with high-class waitstaff. Disappointed.

Judge for yourself
When a new restaurant opens and promises to deliver something fresh and unique, people in perth will flock to it as we don't quite have the diversity of Melbourne or Sydney. 1907 has been tastefully done.
A sophisticated late night bar downstairs is separated by the most elegant of dining rooms hidden down Queen Street in a 100 year old building. A visit to Melbourne and you will stumble across these bars which are impossible to find on a map which provide an excellent night out.
The economic wind fall which is currently Perth will attract the wealthiest of punters here who dont even bat an eye lid over the price of lavish cocktails and bottles of Veuve being served in abundance on this night. But I ask, how long will it last, and how many customers will decide to return?
From a dinner perspective there are other places doing it better and represent better value.
Entree was outstanding. Simple in its ingredients and complex in flavour. But then to charge $54 for some pieces of venison served alone. I am sorry but whilst it was good I still cant see the value.
Service was straight from the hospitality college and the atmosphere was too uptight for me. This is fine dining and you dont establish yourself overnight. Customer expectations are high and you want them to be coming back. Get down there try it for yourself. Then let's see if we are still talking about 1907 in 2009.
