If you know anything of the Doherty Hotel group, then you'll guess that Restaurant 1834 is the type of place you take someone you're hoping to impress (and there's been a hotel here since 1834, if you haven't clicked). The restaurant is located in a cavernous, three-storey space off the lobby of the beautifully renovated Grand Mercure Hadleys Hotel building. Despite the distant ceiling, the restaurant is cosy and retains a sense of intimacy thanks to warm colours, friendly staff and thoughtful decoration and interior design.
The contemporary menu features plenty of Tasmanian and King Island produce. The weekend afternoon tea has taken off as an extraordinary local success, and without a booking you're not going. While we're on the subject, it's advisable to book for any meal here, as tables not filled by hotel guests are easily taken by the after-work crowd; restaurants don't get much more central than this one.
