It's almost criminal how easy Andrew Cibej makes opening a new venue seems, particularly in light of the depressingly bleak statistics facing any new hospitality venture.
From Vini around the corner to Berta only a stone's throw away, Cibej has been the brains behind some of Sydney's most exciting openings of late. Now, with the bureaucratic red tape finally cleared (and the Pocket History of NSW Licensing Laws working title firmly stowed) Cibej has unveiled his latest offer: 121 BC.
Like other stablemates in the Cibej portfolio, vino is king at 121 BC. Food very clearly plays second fiddle, but is also much more than an after-thought. Refined bar snacks like marinated olives and chicken liver pate are interspersed with more substantial offerings like veal carpaccio and fresh mussels on the meandering menu. The food is designed only for two purposes - to share, and to drink wine with - and in this respect does an admirable job.
