Janani Homebush
Authentic food and ludicrously low prices are an irresistible combination, particularly when married with one of Sydney's unique dining experiences. An integral part of the local Sri Lankan community, Janani plays host to a colourful crew of sub-continental expats at all times of the day and week.
An unassuming brick frontage gives no hint of the tropical aromas of coconut and spices that will entice the senses as you walk into this gaily decorated space. The restaurant's particular claim to fame is 'pani puri' - light-as-air balls of batter that almost need an instruction manual to eat. Filled with a spicy mixture of peas and chickpeas, they're topped with a watery broth of astringent tamarind and coriander and quickly popped into the mouth for an explosion of tastes and textures.
Many also come here for such Sri Lankan menu staples as the string hoppers: intricate tangles of rice noodles served with fragrant coconut sambals; and southern Indian favourites such as dosai: lentil and rice crepes. If a curry appeals, order one of Janani's stainless steel 'thali' plates, with its mixture of flavours, pickles and an all-important flaky roti to mop up the spicy juices.
