Mexican Restaurants in Sydney

An American colleague once whined to us that there weren't any proper Mexican restaurants in Sydney, to which we replied quizzically, "but what's wrong with cheesy nachos?" Since then we've discovered that Mexican food doesn't come in a box with flavour sachets, and our eyes have been opened right here in Sydney. Yes, the local Mexican scene is looking up.

When the aforementioned Mexican aficionado was complaining about the quality of Sydney's tacos, one of the only exceptions made was Azteca's. As well as those easily identifiable Mexican staples (the ones that we know from the supermarket) the menu embraces truly authentic Latin cuisine, such as mole poblano (chicken with spicy chilli, chocolate and almond sauce). Since then, the Guzman y Gomez eateries have joined the ranks of fair dinkum Mexican restaurants. These taquerias have popped up in a few locations across the city, serving genuine soft tacos and spicy burritos.

For those who prefer their nachos accompanied by icy margaritas (no criticism - we like them that way too), Cafe Pacifico or Mad Mex are probably more your style. Whether you're on the lookout for authentic Baja cuisine or have a shameful addiction to Tex-Mex, it seems Sydney's Mexican restaurants are finally delivering.
