Boardwalk Cafe Larrakeyah
In the upmarket suburb of Cullen Bay, where the price of real estate is skyrocketing, it's comforting to know that not everything in this elite part of town is unaffordable. The owners of the Boardwalk Cafe have paired their low-cost menu with an in-house bottle shop, with the aim of keeping prices low. This self-service-style concept is the first of its kind in the city and it works.
The menu is divided into categories: meals for less than $5, $10, $15 and $20. The food is great value for money, with a decent dinner for two coming in under the $50 mark. The portions are generous and much of the seafood-inspired menu is fresh from the wharf. Order up a bucket of Territory tiger prawns, or a large plate of wild barramundi with chips (a bargain at $12); wash it down with a piccolo bottle of chardonnay and you've got yourself a feast fit for a king.
The bottle shop's prices are only slightly more than you'd pay at your local liquor shop, but are compensated by big steel wine buckets and free ice to keep your stash icy cold. The view from the back deck over the Cullen Bay Marina is beautiful, particularly at sunset.
